Roger Schoenst

February 19, 1953 — June 26, 2022

Carmine

Roger Dale Schoenst went to be with the Lord and those faithfully departed loved ones early on June 26, 2022.

He was born on February 19, 1953, to Fritz Conrad Sr. and Estella Ida (Neumann) Schoenst at The Farm near Carmine. He grew up loving the cowboy way of life. He broke horses and continued to halter break colts until the last two months of his life. Roger never met a stranger. Anywhere he went he could strike up a conversation. He loved his family, horses, cowboy things, and talking to people. Roger also enjoyed hunting as a young boy, shooting guns, drawing, leather work, and creating things with a wood-burning pen.

He met the love of his life, and this changed his life for the better. He married Kathy Diane Mantey on November 12, 1983, at Saint John’s United Church of Christ in Burton, Texas. Soon came Heather, Mandy, and Chance. They had adventurous years raising their family and spent much of their time riding at home or in cutting arenas, round pens, working pens, show arenas and sale barns. He would do just about anything for his family and loved ones.

Roger had several different medical issues he had to battle throughout his life and was able to come out on the other side. The most notable these being the liver transplant he received in 2006. He and his family are forever grateful and appreciative of how the community supported him. Transplant doctors estimated a 6-year life expectancy, which turned into 16. The greatest blessing of his life was being able to meet his four grandchildren, all of whom he absolutely adored!

He is survived by his wife Kathy of 38 years, daughter Heather and husband Kyle Kaspar, daughter Mandy and husband Colton Guelker, son Chance Schoenst, grandchildren: Kylee, Heath, and Hunter Kaspar, and Ida Blackwell, brother Melvin Schoenst, sister-in-law Jeanette Schoenst, cousin Wilton and wife Pam Schoenst and their children and grandchildren. He is also survived by numerous in-laws, nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Roger was preceded in death by his parents, Fritz Conrad Sr. and Estella (Neumann) Schoenst, brother Fritz Schoenst Jr., in-law parents Arthur and Bernice (Buerger) Mantey, and many aunts, uncles, and cousins.

Serving as pallbearers will be son Chance Schoenst, sons-in-law Kyle Kaspar and Colton Guelker, friends: Willie McKenzie, Nick Robertson, and Cash Robertson. Honorary Pallbearers will be brother, Melvin Schoenst, daughters Heather Kaspar and Mandy Guelker, grandchildren, Kylee, Heath, and Hunter Kaspar, and Ida Blackwell, nieces and nephews, Sue Schoenst and Kim Sternadel and Staci and Nick Brailas, LaCinda Kasparek and Wynona Posas.

A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m., Friday, July 1, 2022, at Martin Luther Lutheran Church (MLLC) in Carmine with Pastor David Tinker officiating. Burial will follow at Carmine Cemetery. Refreshments will be provided by the Women of the ELCA at the MLLC Fellowship Hall following the gravesite service.
