Matthew Miller

November 1, 1953 — April 21, 2022

Matthew (Matt) Stillwell Miller passed away on April 21, 2022 at the age of 68. Born November 1, 1953 in Mt. Vernon, Ohio to Eugene and Doris Miller. The family moved to Houston in 1967 where Matt graduated from Memorial High School. In the late 1970s Matt moved to Brenham where he met his wife Dodie Benke Miller. Dodie and Matt met while she was working for Matt's dad. On a summer day, Matt walked into the office at the Bassett Building, a bit dirty from working cattle, and they were set up on their first date at Homeburger on the corner of Main St. and E Alamo St.  They were married November 1st, 1986.

Matt managed Rolling M Ranch for over 30 years and pursued his passions of hiking, rock polishing, making walking sticks, reading books and in his earlier years was an avid surfer. Above all, his favorite hobby was working outside, from mowing and planting trees to caring for animals, and he took pride in maintaining a well-manicured lawn.

Matt led a life of service, working with children in Houston, helping adults through their addiction recovery, and English Second Language (ESL) students in Brenham. He leaned on his faith and the outdoors was his sanctuary to connect with God.

Matt was preceded in death by his parents Eugene and Doris Miller and his sister Minta Marcia Miller.

He is survived by his wife Dodie Miller, son Jonathan Miller; daughter Minta Dahmann and husband Zachary; sisters:  Melinda Powell and husband William, Melissa Rush and husband Carl; and his beloved dogs, Chica and Inky.

At Matt's request, a small family graveside service was held on April 29, 2022 at Oak Rest Cemetery. Matt volunteered at the cemetery to preserve and upkeep the grounds. If so inclined, memorials honoring Matt are suggested to the Oak Rest Cemetery Association, a nonprofit organization, via check mailed to 801 West Briarwood, Brenham, Texas 77833 with “Fence - Matt Miller” in the memo line for their upcoming fundraiser to construct a new fence to help protect this historic cemetery.

Friends and family, to honor Matt, take time to walk outside and enjoy nature and the trees, when you feel the wind blow or a light rain, he will be there.

Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Memorial Oaks Chapel, 1306 West Main St., Brenham.
