Mary Bates

Mary Ann Bates, 81 of Brenham, passed away Wednesday, February 24, 2021 at Focus Care Nursing Home following a fall which resulted in a head injury.

Visitation will be Saturday, February 27, 2021 from 7:00 a.m. – 7:00 p.m. at Memorial Oaks Chapel. A graveside Christian burial will be held Sunday, February 28, 2021 at 2:00 p.m. at Oaklawn Cemetery, Somerville, TX.

Mary Ann was born July 25, 1939 in Lyons, TX to Leon Bates and Madeline (Schoppe) Bates. She was baptized in Salem Evangelical Church located in the Birch Community on March 14, 1940. She grew up in the Houston area where her parents owned and operated Bates Feed and Hardware. She attended Houston area schools and graduated from San Jacinto High School May 31, 1957. Following graduation, she married Joe Dan Donnell. Their marriage was blessed with three daughters.

Her career consisted of various jobs starting at Texas National Bank as a teller.  She later worked in various positions including accounting, secretarial, and administrative jobs throughout her working years.

Mary Ann loved work, crafts, country music, and dancing. She was a fun-loving person and enjoyed being with people and making friends.

Mary Ann moved to Brenham in 2014 and was a resident at Kruse Memorial Lutheran Village, Belle Towers, Argent Court, and Focus Care Nursing Home.

She became a member of Grace Lutheran Church in 2018 and attended when her health permitted.

She is preceded in death by her parents. Survivors include her daughters and sons-in-law: Denise and Michael McKinnon, Danna Donnell, Delaine and Brad Koonce, two grandsons, Travis and Cody Roberts, and one brother, James Robert Bates.
