Marlene was born on October 23, 1937 in Burton, TX to Edwin T. and Martha Felder Menk. She was baptized on April 29, 1938 at her parent’s house by Rev. E. Eiken. She was confirmed on March 18, 1951 at St. John’s Evangelical Church of Burton by Rev. E.H. Schwengel. She married her husband, Billie R. Haas, on December 23, 1956 at St. John’s Evangelical Church by Rev E.H. Schwengel. She graduated from Burton High School in 1956 and attended Massey Business School in Houston, TX. She worked for Sealy Mattress Company for twenty-three years and then retired to become a housewife.

Marlene was a member of St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church of Brenham where she taught Sunday School. She served on various committees and began and lead the Family Caregivers Support Group for four years. This group helped caregivers on their journey of taking care of a family member and making sure they had the support and guidance they needed.

Marlene was a devoted wife, mom and grandmother. She spent most of her time volunteering at local organizations like Goodfellows, making sure that local families would have a good Christmas for their children. Marlene loved to serve the Lord at church doing various things. She spent a lot of time at the Brenham Rest Home taking care of her mother and helping other residents as well. She had a giving heart and would help anyone.

Marlene loved to go to garage sales and antique shops and she would always find something to bring home and display it. She spent a lot of time decorating and making their home look beautiful. One of her favorite things to do was play the piano and she loved to sing and play all kinds of music, especially old hymns. Marlene and her husband Billie made a wonderful life together and loved their family very much. Their daughter Donna and her husband Jay made them both very proud along with their grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Marlene is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Donna Kay Petrash and husband Jay of Brenham, TX; sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Betty Kolkhorst and husband Fred of Bryan, TX; and sister-in-law, Gertrude Hohlt of Brenham, TX; grandchildren, Jessica and husband Charlie Grimes; great-grandchildren, Emilee and Avery; grandchildren, Katie and Husband Kyle Krenek; and great-grandchildren, Lexi and Lena.
