Laverna Jacob

Laverna Oppermann Jacob, age 92, died peacefully in her home meeting her Lord on April 3, 2021.

Visitation will be from 7a.m. to 7p.m. on Tuesday April 6, 2021 at Memorial Oaks Chapel.   Her funeral service will be at Christ Lutheran Church, Brenham, Texas on Wednesday April 7, 2021 at 10a.m. Burial will follow at Prairie Lea Cemetery.  Face masks will be required at the funeral service.

She was born in Oldenburg, Texas to Edgar and Olga Spies Oppermann on October 1,1928. She was baptized at the family home on November 22, 1928 by the Rev. Robert Heise and confirmed on September 5, 1943 at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Rutersville by Rev. Heise. On April 4, 1948 she married Ide A. Jacob at St. John’s. The Jacob’s lived most of their married life in Brenham where Laverna was employed by Brenham ISD for 32 years as secretary for Brenham High School and Brenham Elementary School.

Mrs. Jacob was a charter member of Christ Lutheran Church where she served as President and Secretary of the Women of the Church, taught Sunday School and served several terms on the church council. The Quilting group benefited from the many quilts she helped to sew and ship off to Lutheran World Relief. She was active as a life time member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Veterans of Foreign Wars where she served as President for a number of years and also district president. She held memberships in the American Legion Auxiliary, Sons of Hermann and N.A.R.F.E. In her retirement Mrs. Jacob enjoyed working in her yard and flowers, sending cards, mentoring at Brenham Elementary and volunteering at Hospice Brazos Valley. Most of all she loved spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, always having candy and ice cream when they came to visit.

Mrs. Jacob is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Sharon and Terry Logan of Brenham; son and daughter-in-law, Randy and JoAnn Jacob also of Brenham; and son and daughter-in-law, Danny and Donna Jacob of Bellville. Grandchildren: Heidi and Ritchie Surovik, Jason and Dana Jacob, Brett and Stephanie Logan, and Seth and Leslie Logan. Great-grandchildren are Marshall, Reid and Graham Jacob; Creighton (Cash) and Dylan Hillgartner, Kyle Surovik, Cameron and Colton Logan, Austin Tropea, Keller Logan and Clayton Jones. She also leaves behind numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, parents and brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law.

Serving as pallbearers are Heidi and Ritchie Surovik, Jason and Dana Jacob, Brett and Stephanie Logan, and Seth and Lesley Logan.

Honorary pallbearers are her caregivers Irma Ray, Eddie Nicholson, Nancy Moore, Veronica Breedlove, Trenay Moore, Halina Powell and Mary Ann Wycott.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be given to Christ Lutheran Church of Brenham, Hospice Brazos Valley or a charity of choice.

Funeral arrangements are entrusted to Memorial Oaks Chapel, 1306 West Main Street, Brenham, TX 77833.
