James McCune Jr.

1936-2021

Judge James D. McCune Jr. was born on May 15, 1936 in La Porte, TX.

Right out of high school in 1954, he joined the Marines and was stationed in San Diego, California. After being discharged in 1957 he decided to look up a girl he knew from high school. She was Virginia Wilkening and they dated for three months and were married. They recently celebrated their 63rd Anniversary. After the wedding they decided to move from Texas to California. They lived there for 15 years. During those years, they both worked for an Aviation Company. He went to college and graduated from Cal Poly.

They had 2 children, a daughter, Jamie Dell-Fay born in 1962 and a son James D. III born in 1964. He moved his family back to Texas in 1972. He and Virginia went to work at Hughes Tool Company and the children graduated from La Porte High School. The kids went their separate ways and after retiring from Hughes, they settled in Burton, Virginia’s family hometown.

They purchased Mathies Grocery, renaming it Burton Mercantile. He ran for Justice of the Peace Precinct 4 in Washington County, he won and continued to serve for 20 years with Robin Wellmann as his clerk.  After retiring, he and Virginia moved out of Burton to the Wilkening Farm off of FM 2502.

And, yes, the kids moved out to the farm. Jamie married John Logan and James III married Melissa Ludwig. They gave him 4 grandchildren, Danielle Suchanek with husband Aaron, James McCune IV with fiancé Chandler Borchardt, Caitlin and Ashlyn Gajewski.   They gave him three great-grandchildren, Caleb Suchanek, Thoryn and Brixlee McCune. In early 2020 he became ill, his health slowly declined until he was admitted to the hospital on January 15, 2021.

He came back home to the farm by ambulance escorted by Brenham PD and Washington County Sheriff’s office and Constable’s office on the 20th. He passed at 6:30 a.m. on the 21st. He was a Christian, baptized by Sid Stevenson of the First Christian Church of Burton. He will see his parents and sister in heaven. He leaves his family and dear brother and friend, Joe Morris McCune with his partner Sandy.

We would like to thank Hospice Brazos Valley.

Due to the COVID Pandemic, he will not have a memorial service, but you may come by Memorial Oaks Chapel at 1306 West Main Street, Brenham, TX 77833 to sign a register book and leave a message.
