Gerhard Veith

November 23, 1954 — June 24, 2022

Sunrise Beach, TX

Gerhard Veith was born November 23, 1954 in Munich Germany to Edward (Archie) Clarence Veith and Martha Elizabeth Bischof Veith while his dad was serving in the US military and stationed in Germany. Gerhard spent his early years in Germany and at the age of five he moved with his mother to join his father in Houston, Texas. After arriving in Houston, Gerhard’s sisters Judy and Linda were born and completed the Veith family.

Gerhard attended elementary through high school in the Hiram Clarke neighborhood of Houston. He graduated from Madison High School. During those years he enjoyed surfing and spent many weekends at the beach with his friends. He also went to Mexico a time or two to catch a wave.

After high school Gerhard worked with his dad in the construction business. In 1980 Gerhard moved to the Cuernavaca neighborhood of Austin with his future wife, Judy. In Austin, Gerhard worked for the Austin Water District where he operated heavy equipment to maintain Austin’s water supply. In 1987, Judy and Gerhard’s son, Jason, was born. Gerhard enjoyed watching Jason play baseball, and as Jason got older, he and Gerhard enjoyed going to movies together. When Jason was young, Gerhard adopted Nick, his beloved dachshund of 17 years. After many years at the Water District, Gerhard founded his own trucking company, V Hauling, where he worked until his retirement in 2015.

In 2011, Gerhard began a relationship with his long-time friend, Elizabeth Straus. In 2015 Gerhard and Elizabeth moved to their home in Sunrise Beach, Texas. There, Gerhard spent his days watching every single Astros game of the season, playing pool with friends, doting on their dachshund, Daisy, and reading the newspaper every morning with a cup of decaf coffee. Gerhard’s other favorite pastimes throughout the years included spending time with his family, enjoying herbal remedies, walking around Town Lake in Austin, watching football, going to Texans and Astros games, reading biographies from the library, and visiting old friends all around Texas.

Gerhard was very close with his mother and father, who preceded him in death. He is also preceded in death by his wife Judy. He is survived by his partner Elizabeth Straus; son Jason and his fiance Christine Foster; sisters Judy Burdett and Linda Chavez, and their husbands Steve and Jeff; nieces Renee McGee, her husband Scott, and daughter Harper, and Chelsea Sutton and fiance Brett Canino; nephew Marcus Sutton and wife Elise; step-daughter Audrey Straus and her husband Kyle Teske; several cousins cousins and many dear friends.

Gerhard was good at having a good time, and he was a loyal and caring son, partner, father, brother, uncle, and friend. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him.

Pallbearers will be Jason Veith, Marcus Sutton, Scott McGee, Kyle Teske, Larry Deshotel, and George Morovich.
