Elwood Jaster

November 28, 1941 — December 29, 2020

Elwood Jaster, 79, of Brenham, passed away peacefully on December 29, 2020. Visitation with the family will be from 4:00 pm until 6:00 pm on Saturday, January 2, 2021. Funeral services will be at 2:00 pm on Sunday, January 3, 2021, both held at Memorial Oaks Chapel. Burial will follow at the Shelby Cemetery in Shelby, Texas.

Elwood Ernest Jaster was born on November 28, 1941, in the Greenvine Community of Washington County. He grew up in the area and attended school at Wesley. He graduated from Brenham High School in 1959. He immediately went to work at Blue Bell Creameries. He had a short departure from this work to serve in the US Army. Elwood served in Vietnam for five months. During his time in the Army, he worked with the motor pool, moving heavy equipment and doing road construction.

After returning from his Army tenure, Elwood returned to Blue Bell, staying with the company until his retirement on April 1, 2006. He rose through the ranks quickly and he spent years as a supervisor. Elwood was proud to have been on hand helping open the Blue Bell plant in Broken Arrow, Oklahoma. In all, Elwood spent over 45 years with Blue Bell.

In his spare time, Elwood enjoyed working on his farm, tending cattle, and keeping his garden. He grew vegetables to eat and share with family and enjoyed growing flowers as well to make the property more beautiful. Elwood enjoyed gathering the family together for bbq’s and get-togethers. He also looked forward to his and Carol’s leisure trips to Louisiana.

Elwood is survived by his wife of 53 years, Carol; their children, David (Tammy) Jaster, Jill (Justin) Hirtzel, Holly Jaster and special friend Raymond Gandy; grandchildren Justin, Colton and Joshua; and sisters-in-law Ruth Jaster of Houston and Janelle Jaster of Austin.

Elwood is preceded in death by his parents, Erich and Annie (Overmann) Jaster; sister Olevia Gaskamp and her husband Erwin; brothers Melvin, Clarence, Erich and wife Pauline.

Pallbearers will be Elwood’s grandsons, son-in-law, Justin Hirtzel, friends Henry and Brandon Jankowiak, and Raymond Gandy.
