Elena Victoria Hernández-Chona, 91, of Brenham, TX, passed away on Friday, February 10th, 2023 at Memorial Hermann Memorial City Medical Center in Houston.

A visitation will be held at Memorial Oaks Chapel in Brenham on February 13th of 2023, from 2:00 to 7:00 pm; the Rosary will be prayed at 5:30 pm. The funeral mass will be held at Saint Mary’s Catholic Church on February 14th of 2023, at 2:00 pm, followed by the burial at Calvary Cemetery in Brenham.

Elena was born on August 21st, 1931 to her parents Vicente Hernández-Gómez and María Ana Victoria Chona-Bustos in Chinácota, Colombia. She was baptized on April 16th of 1933 in Chinácota. Elena spent her childhood and adolescence living and working at her family’s farm. She and her family were displaced from the countryside to Cúcuta due to political violence. She married Pedro Jesús Carvajal-Castellanos on May 16th of 1970 at Nuestra Señora de las Angustias Parish in Cúcuta. Elena was a grocery store co-owner and manager alongside her husband for many years. Later, she helped look after her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She participated in a community Senior Center where she was part of a basketball team with two of her sisters and several neighbors; they won second place in a citywide tournament. She immigrated to Texas on September 6th of 2007 and spent the following years living with her family in Brenham. Elena dedicated her life to being a homemaker. She was a member of the senior center in Brenham. She enjoyed reading, solving sudoku and crossword puzzles, and cooking. She often took walks and was fond of watching the Colombian news on TV. Along with journaling and storytelling, she also often prayed the rosary.

Elena is survived by her son Jesús Adaime Carvajal-Hernández; daughters Maria Cristina Velásquez and Nidia Esperanza Carvajal-Hernández and husband Rafael Antonio Galvis-Zafra; brother Aldo Marino Hernández-Chona and partner Maria; sister-in-law Nelly Matilde Mogollon de Hernández; grandchildren Elkin David Galvis-Carvajal and wife Kelly Elizabeth Galvis, Jenny Carolina Galvis-Carvajal and husband Jorge Luis Vega-Flores, Ivonne Andrea Galvis-Carvajal, and Luisa Cristina Velásquez and husband Phillip Burkholder; great-grandchildren Juztin Santiago Galvis and girlfriend Kamiko Prichard, Joelyn Samantha Vega-Galvis, and Evangeline Ward; numerous other nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends who live in Colombia, Chile, Spain, Venezuela, Australia and the United States.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, daughter Melba Elena Carvajal-Hernández, brothers Pedro Daniel Hernández-Chona, Juan Vicente Hernández-Chona, and Carlos Emiro Hernández-Chona; sisters Rosa Julia Hernández-Chona and husband Rito Hernández Morantes, Blanca F. Hernández de Carvajal and husband Higinio Carvajal-Castellanos, Carmen Dolores Hernández-Chona (Lola) and husband Ramón Mendoza, Susana Hernández-Chona, Beatriz Hernández-Chona, and Clara Sofia Hernández-Chona and partner Nicolás Angulo; son-in-law Hernando Velásquez-Gómez, and niece and nephews from Colombia, Blanca Marleny Hernández, Antonio Hernández, José Rodolfo Mendoza-Hernández, and Carlos Eduardo Hernández-Mogollon.

Memorials honoring Elena may be given to The Margaret E. Blizzard Senior Activity Center, 1301 East Tom Green St., Brenham, TX.

 

 

 

Elena Victoria Hernández-Chona, 91, de Brenham, TX, falleció el viernes 10 de febrero de 2023 en el Memorial Hermann Memorial City Medical Center en Houston.

El velorio se llevará a cabo en la Capilla Memorial Oaks en Brenham el 13 de febrero de 2023, de 2:00 a 7:00 pm; el rosario se rezará a las 5:30 pm. La misa fúnebre se oficiará en la Iglesia Católica de Saint Mary el 14 de febrero de 2023 a las 2:00 pm, seguida por el entierro en el Cementerio Calvary en Brenham.

Elena nació en Chinácota, Colombia el 21 de agosto de 1931, siendo sus padres Vicente Hernández-Gómez y María Ana Victoria Chona-Bustos. Fue bautizada el 16 de abril de 1933 en Chinácota. Elena pasó su infancia y adolescencia viviendo y trabajando en la finca de su familia. Ella y su familia fueron desplazados del campo a Cúcuta por la violencia política. Contrajo matrimonio con Pedro Jesús Carvajal-Castellanos el 16 de mayo de 1970 en la Parroquia Nuestra Señora de las Angustias de Cúcuta. Elena fue copropietaria y administradora de una tienda de víveres junto con su esposo durante muchos años. Más tarde, ayudó a cuidar a sus nietos y bisnietos. Perteneció a una asociación del adulto mayor donde formó parte de un equipo de baloncesto con dos de sus hermanas y varias vecinas, logrando ser subcampeonas en un torneo intermunicipal. Inmigró a Texas el 6 de septiembre de 2007 y pasó los siguientes años viviendo con su familia en Brenham. Elena dedicó su vida a ser ama de casa. Era miembro del Senior Center en Brenham. Además de cocinar y caminar, le gustaba leer, resolver sudoku y crucigramas y ver las noticias colombianas en televisión. También le gustaba tomar notas, contar anécdotas y rezar el rosario y otras oraciones con frecuencia.

A Elena le sobreviven su hijo Jesús Adaime Carvajal-Hernández; hijas María Cristina Velásquez y Nidia Esperanza Carvajal-Hernández y esposo Rafael Antonio Galvis-Zafra; hermano Aldo Marino Hernández-Chona y compañera María; cuñada Nelly Matilde Mogollón de Hernández; nietos Elkin David Galvis-Carvajal y esposa Kelly Elizabeth Galvis, Jenny Carolina Galvis-Carvajal y esposo Jorge Luis Vega-Flores, Ivonne Andrea Galvis-Carvajal y Luisa Cristina Velásquez y esposo Phillip Burkholder; bisnietos Juztin Santiago Galvis y novia Kamiko Prichard, Joelyn Samantha Vega-Galvis y Evangeline Ward; muchas otras sobrinas, sobrinos, familiares y amigos que viven en Colombia, Chile, España, Australia, Venezuela y los Estados Unidos.
