In 1962, Clarence enlisted in the United States Air Force. After honorable discharge of active duty, he obtained an associate degree and entered the Fire Academy. As a child, Clarence experienced a severe burn injury which scarred his legs but inspired him to serve as a fire fighter. Clarence served with the Amarillo Fire Department for 13 years. He was self-employed for many years before seeking employment with the Boy Scouts of America as a District Executive in Brenham Texas area, where he has resided since 2007.

Clarence married Sharren K. Prater on October 20th,1962. Together, they raised four children in Amarillo, Texas, with the guiding influence of their faith in Jesus Christ.  His faith inspired him to serve his family and community as an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. He served the youth in many capacities and served as the Branch President of the local Brenham congregation of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. Clarence and Sharren taught their children to work hard, play hard and serve others. Their home was full of good food, laughter, family and friends. He loved spending family time in the mountains, on lakes, cruises and motorcycles. His wife Sharren passed suddenly after 48 years of marriage[SJD1]  on October 15, 2009.

Clarence unexpectedly found love again when he met Sharon Scott. They kept each other young and vibrant by dancing, road tripping, hiking, eating out and enjoying Friday night dates at the movies. They loved working in the yard together and serving in their church and community. Clarence and Sharon celebrated their 10th wedding anniversary on September 10th, 2021.
