Virgil Earl Stiewert

October 29, 1958 — July 2, 2025

Brenham

Virgil Earl Stiewert, Jr., of Brenham, passed away suddenly on July 2, 2025 at the age of 66.

Virgil was born October 29, 1958 in Giddings, Texas to Virgil and Ida Bell Loewe Stiewert. He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith.

He graduated from Brenham High School in 1977, where he was a member of the basketball team and track team. Known for his remarkable speed, he earned the nickname “The Flying Dutchman.” Virgil cherished time with his family and friends and found joy in lending a helping hand whenever possible. Over the years, he’s been the caretaker of the family, even to those who have passed. He frequently visited cemeteries where family members or friends were buried, leaving flowers on their grave ensuring they were never forgotten.

Family and friends were the heart of Virgil’s life. He was also known for his humor and lighthearted approach to life. A true practical joker, he never took things too seriously and had a special gift for making others laugh. He loved barbecuing and spent many hours of his weekend behind the pit. Virgil also enjoyed taking the road less travelled, introducing his son to different backroads throughout the county. Virgil's legacy lives on in the laughter he inspired, the meals he shared, and the love he gave so freely.

Survivors include his son: Jason Stiewert and his mother: Charlene Stiewert; his brother and sister-in-law: Myron and Sherry Stiewert all of Brenham; and aunts, cousins, nieces, nephews and too many friends to count.

Virgil is preceded by his parents: Virgil and Ida Bell Stiewert; his brother: Randy Stiewert and his grandparents: Reinhardt and Laura Stiewert and Emil and Ruby Loewe.

The funeral service will be 10:00 a.m. Saturday, July 12, 2025 at Memorial Oaks Chapel with Pastor Jill Vivroux officiating. Burial will follow in Prairie Lea Cemetery.

Visitation with the family will be from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Friday, July 11, 2025 at Memorial Oaks Chapel.

Pallbearers include Louis Simek, Jr., Tim Murski, Ronnie Heidemann, Wayne Winkelmann, Daryl Dahman and Clyde Vierus. Honorary pallbearers will be his friends from the Sons of Hermann Lodge.

For those gathering to remember him, Virgil wouldn’t want anything formal. He’d want everyone to come as they are - casual, comfortable, and at ease. That’s how he lived, and that’s how he’d want to be remembered.

A special “Thank You” to Lisa Cernosek for her generous contribution to the family.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations in Virgil’s memory to “It’s a 70’s Thing” Scholarship, P. O. Box 2039, Brenham, Texas 77834 or to the American Heart Association, National Center, 7272 Greenville Avenue, Dallas, TX 75231.
