Susan Kate (Flanagan) Lopez

December 10, 1955 — July 25, 2025

Chappell Hill, TX

Susan Kate (Flanagan) Lopez, a woman of extraordinary grace, creativity, patience, and southern hospitality, passed away unexpectedly on July 25, 2025, at the age of 69.

A devoted wife of 34 years, Susan shared a rare and unwavering bond with her beloved husband. Theirs was a partnership rooted in love, laughter, and mutual respect. They worked side by side as proprietors of The Brenham House Bed & Breakfast, caring for tourists and community alike.

Susan was truly one of a kind. As a mother, she embodied patience, compassion, and friendship. Susan was a caring and reassuring presence whose steadfast love for her son, Jerimy Boothe, almost equaled the countless laughs they shared throughout a lifetime of conversations about the craziness of life. Jessica, her daughter-in-law, considers herself uniquely lucky to have experienced Susan’s soft-hearted encouragement, nonjudgmental understanding, words of support, and knowing smiles. Best of all, she loved her sass and humor, reserved for her most trusted circle of friends.

A true Texas woman, Susan mastered the snap of a perfect tennis serve, was a garden warrior with dirt covering her gloves (covering her perfectly manicured nails), rivaled the beauty blooming around her, created gourmet meals rich with flavor, could bluff a poker hand in a game with friends, and was steeped in Southern charm and grace.

Her traits made “SuSu” nothing short of magical in her role as grandmother. Affectionate and gentle, she poured creativity and intention into every moment. She taught more than skills -- she taught experiences. Whether it was the etiquette of a formal tea birthday party, the precise stroke of a paintbrush, the subtle balance of spices in a dish, how to properly oil a baseball glove or to chalk a 4 square court, her grandchildren's happiness ranked above and beyond, a testament to her thoughtful and nurturing spirit. Whether cooking with James, painting with Jentry, playing the VR headset or Nintendo Switch with Jachin, or practicing basketball and baseball with Bax, SuSu gave her time and wisdom with elegance and joy, even crafting unforgettable memories through her spirited “Camp Why Not.” She never refused to try something new, a testament to her wide-ranging curiosity and care.

Susan held tight to family traditions while creating her own legacy of love, beauty, and heartfelt connection. She leaves behind a family who adores her and a community that was forever enriched by her presence. Her legacy lives on in the gardens she nurtured, the art she created, the meals she lovingly prepared, and most of all, in the memories of those who were fortunate enough to know and love her.

Susan is lovingly remembered by her husband, James K. Lopez; her son, Jerimy J. Boothe and his wife, Jessica Bertrand Boothe. She was a nurturing grandmother to their children James, Jentry, Jachin, and Jeneral, who brought immense joy to her life. She is also survived by her mother, Sue Flanagan of Beaumont, TX; her older brother, Jon Flanagan and wife Melinda of Lumberton, TX; and her younger brother, Kurt Flanagan and wife Diane of Seabrook, TX. She was preceded in death by her father, Floyd Flanagan.
