Philip (Phil) Joseph Meehan, age 76, of Bellville, Texas passed away peacefully on April 5, Easter Sunday, in the early morning. He was born in New York City on October 22, 1949, a Saturday, to Philip and Rose Doran Meehan. The days on which he was born and died were auspicious. As a Saturday's child he worked hard for his living, but the Sunday's child in him brought happiness, goodness and wisdom into play also. His kindness and sense of humor made life fun for family, friends and co-workers.
Phil came to Houston, Texas in 1969 to attend the University of St. Thomas where he met his future wife and made Texas his forever home. He worked for Aviva Metals for 32 years, retiring as Vice President of Sales in 2018. Over the years the staff at Aviva became his work family. The strong relationships he formed there grew into lasting friendships. Years after his retirement he still had a special place in his heart for his colleagues at Aviva.
As an all-around sports enthusiast, Phil's free time was focused on the joy of competition. As a young man he joined city league baseball and ice hockey teams. Later he shifted his focus to soccer and spent many years coaching his sons' teams. One of the sweet honors he earned while working with the youth was the nickname, "Coachie." He made every child feel special and successful. He had such a great time he eventually played for and coached an adult team. Football was his favorite spectator sport and the Fighting Irish of Notre Dame was his favorite team.
Phil was the proud father of two sons, Sean Philip and Todd Ryan Meehan. They were his treasures and his legacy. His pride overflowed to their families with his daughters-in-law holding a special place in his heart. "Gramps" to the grandchildren, he was always an accessible and funny companion who knew how to play, support, and teach.
One of the highlights of Phil's life was the purchase of a 26-acre property in Industry that he named "Blue Hole Place" to honor the many stories the locals told him about the swimming hole that had once been there. At Blue Hole Place the boy from New York City fully embraced Texas country life and bought a John Deere tractor, the best toy he ever owned.
He will be lovingly remembered by his wife, Debbie; his sons Sean (Karen) and Todd (Jessica); his grandchildren Hattie, Penny, Jack and Luca; his sisters Rosemary (Al) and Diane; as well as a great many in-laws, cousins, nieces, and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents, Philip and Rose Meehan and his brother-in-law, John Khantzian.
Visitation with the family will be from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 25, 2026 at Memorial Oaks Chapel, 1306 West Main Street, Brenham. A rosary will begin at 3:30 p.m. A reception will follow at 2922 Centerhill Circle, Bellville.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the Tilman J. Fertitta Family College of Medicine at the University of Houston.
