Nancy Vernon

Nancy Joyce Vernon of Brenham, Texas, was joyfully reunited with her husband of 61 years, Walter "Jerry" Vernon, older sister, Mabel Powers, as well as her cousin and best friend, Marie Hendrickson, in Heaven on August 17, 2025.Nancy was born April 17, 1933, in the Piney Woods of Diboll, Texas.Diboll High School Class of '50, Miss Diboll, & FFA Sweetheart.

Nancy, or Nana to most, was a graceful and intelligent woman who personified the balance of beauty and wit. She and Jerry built a family on a foundation of faith and unconditional love. She was deeply devoted to her family, making sure all of her babies were given the utmost love and her undivided attention. Nancy was one to attend every milestone, no matter how big or small, with a sense of pride only a true matriarch can understand.

Nancy found joy in the simple things in life, such as picking and pressing wildflowers, cooking for her loved ones, crafting, sewing, and writing letters, each with their own unique sticker to seal her love. She spent many days laughing with loved ones, especially when those moments were accompanied by a picnic anywhere you could find grass or hummingbirds. Nancy also enjoyed putting her love into her cooking. From hello dollies or pigs in a blanket, to peach cobbler or homemade chicken pot pies, Nancy made sure her babies grew big and strong. She was often known to be up before the sun, making breakfast for the family. If Nancy wasn't cooking for the family, there was a likely chance she was on the hunt for a hamburger or fried fish with her best friend and cousin, Marie.

Not only was she a homemaker, Nancy was an extremely intelligent businesswoman. She worked alongside her husband at Vernon Masonry for many years. Together, Nancy and Jerry built a successful business that allowed them to buy their forever property, also known as "the farm." Nancy and Jerry both spent their final years on the farm alongside their two children, three grandchildren, as well as her six great-grandchildren. Thanks to Nancy, every member of her family will always have a place to call home.

Nancy will be forever remembered for her warm smile, her elegant poise, and her unwavering love for her family. She leaves behind a legacy of love and devotion that will live on through each heart that she touched. Her family will forever miss their sweet Nana Banana, but as Nancy would tell them, "give your worries to the Lord."

She is survived by her daughter Gwen and husband Reggie Brown; son Dwayne Vernon and wife Sue; grandchildren, Nicole and husband John Rausch, Chad Brown and wife Kelly, Carrie Nan and husband Trey Stash; great-grandchildren Mason Rausch, Ashton Rausch, Hunter Warren, Shelbie Warren, Lillie Warren and Emmerson Brown; and beloved dog Theo. She was preceded in death by her parents Harry and Estelle Nivens; husband Walter "Jerry" Vernon, sister Mable Powers, and best friend and cousin Marie Hendrickson. Pallbearers include grandsons Chad Brown, John Rausch, and Trey Stash, great-grandson Hunter Warren, nephew Don Vernon, and close family friend Joe Meschwitz.

A celebration of life is scheduled for Saturday, August 23, at Memorial Oaks Chapel. Visitation will be held at 2:00 pm, followed by the service at 3:00 pm. Nancy will be laid to rest at the Masonic Cemetery in Chappell Hill. By family request, in lieu of flowers, they ask for donations to be made to Hospice Brazos Valley in honor of Nancy, who spent many of her final days with her loving caretaker, Cabrini.
