Myra Jane DeFriend, 93, passed away peacefully on June 30, 2026, in Plano, Texas. Born on June 5, 1933, in Houston, Texas, to Samuel Antonio "Antone" DeFriend and LaVisa Ann Eskridge DeFriend. Myra lived a life devoted to faith, education, and service.
A graduate of Brenham High School in Brenham, Texas, Class of 1951, Myra pursued her passion for learning and ministry at Prairie Bible Institute in Alberta, Canada. Her deep commitment to her Christian faith shaped every aspect of her life and career.
Myra began her teaching career in 1961 with the Houston Independent School District before embarking on a transformative chapter as a missionary in Tokyo, Japan. There she taught at the Christian Academy in Japan (CAJ), dedicating herself to educating and mentoring students while sharing her unwavering faith. After returning from Japan, she continued her teaching career in Colorado Springs, Colorado.
In 1994, Myra moved to College Station, Texas, to be closer to her family. She became an active member of Grace Bible Church and formed meaningful relationships with students from Texas A&M University through discipleship and fellowship. Her warmth and guidance left a lasting impact on many young lives.
Myra's generosity extended far beyond her immediate community. She faithfully supported numerous missionaries and Christian organizations such as Camp Peniel, Navigators, and Cru. Her steadfast financial contributions reflected her dedication to spreading the message of Christ worldwide.
Though she never married or had children of her own, Myra cherished her family deeply. She is survived by her sisters Martha Ann DeFriend Burkhardt and Marjorie Mae DeFriend Williams; nephews Morris DeFriend, Roy DeFriend, Joe Burkhardt, David Burkhardt, Jason DeFriend, Russell Williams, Richard Williams, and Daniel Williams; nieces Cathy Burkhardt McJunkin and Julie DeFriend; as well as countless others whose lives she touched through her kindness and faith.
She was predeceased by her parents; brothers Monroe Edmund DeFriend, Ernest "Mark" DeFriend, and Milton Lynn DeFriend; nephew Carl William "Bill" Burkhardt; and nephew Joel Gordon "Jody" DeFriend.
Myra's legacy is one of unwavering devotion to Jesus Christ and selfless service to others. Her life was a testament to the power of faith and love in action. May her memory bring comfort to all who knew her.
A Graveside Service will be held on Friday, July 10, 2026, at 10:00 AM at Prairie Lea Cemetery, 1004 Prairie Lea St, Brenham, Texas.
