Dr. Michael R. Wirtz, 80 of Brenham, passed away Tuesday, September 8, 2026 at his home.

He was born November 15, 1945 in Sugarland, TX to Isiaah and Georgia Sula Wirtz. Michael married Anne Barfield on August 29, 1966.

Michael was a proud graduate of Texas A&M University. He founded Washington Animal Clinic in Brenham, where he dedicated his career to practicing veterinary medicine until his retirement in 1999.

Throughout his life, Michael was deeply involved in his community and the cattle industry. He served as President of the Washington County Fair, was a Director of the Texas & Southwestern Cattle Raisers Association, and was a member of the National Cattlemen's Association.

Michael's true passion was cattle ranching, a love that remained with him throughout his life. During his time at Texas A&M, he was a member of the university's rodeo team until entering veterinary school. He competed as a steer dogger and calf roper, embracing the Western way of life he loved.

Survivors include his wife of 60 years: Anne Wirtz of Brenham; son and daughter-in-law: William and Paige Wirtz of Brenham; daughter and son-in-law: Sarah and Corey Keniston of Bryan; sister: Judy Hinton of Kerrville; grandchildren: Anna Keniston, Kyle Wirtz, Evan Keniston and Ian Wirtz.

He is preceded in death by his parents.

Visitation with the family will be from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. Friday, September 11, 2026 at Memorial Oaks Chapel in Brenham. There will be a private graveside service at Odd Fellows Rest Cemetery in Columbus.
