Lula Beck

February 19, 1928 — June 29, 2023

Brenham, TX

Lula Lee (Lou) Beck of Brenham, Texas, passed away on June 29, 2023, at the age of 95.

Lou was born on Feb. 19, 1928, to Whitney Joseph and Lula Lee Marques in Gulf, Texas and grew up in Boling, Texas. She spent much of her childhood on the beaches of Matagorda and crabbing in the waters of the Intercoastal Canal with her father.

Lou married after high school and began pursuing her education in teaching at Wharton County Junior College, later transferring to Texas State University.  Lou put her studies on hold to join her husband in Waco where he was attending school. They then moved to Houston where she worked in the offices of Cameron Iron Works.

Lou became a dedicated Mother after her son, Michael, was born in 1952. Her daughter, Karen arrived in 1966, the same year she earned her BS degree in Teaching from the University of Houston. She enjoyed being a member of the garden club, scout and girl scout leader, PTA Mom, and was an avid bridge player.

She enjoyed a successful career as an executive administrative assistant at Motorola C&E before taking a position at a private school in Houston teaching art. After retiring she relocated to Brenham where she loved the friendly people and small-town charm.

Lou had a lifelong love of art and spent her time painting and crafting, gardening, playing Bridge and eating Blue Bell ice cream.  A talented painter, Lou combined her skills and taught art in after-school programs for organizations such as the Art League of Houston and Boys and Girls Club of Brenham as well as offering individual lessons to home-schooled children. She dedicated much of her free time to the Brenham Fine Arts League where she was awarded a lifelong membership for her dedication and service.

Even the satisfaction gleaned from sharing the world of art as far and wide as possible, it could not compare with Lou’s true passion; her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, who she loved beyond measure.

Lou was predeceased by her parents Whitney Joseph Marques, Lula Lee Marques, and her sister Josephine Eve Marques. She is survived by son Michael Beck and his wife Anne, daughter Karen Loza and her husband Billy-Joe, grandchildren Jeffrey Beck (Stephanie), Whitney Beck (Lacey), Cody Loza, Zachary Loza, and Henry Loza, and great-grandchildren Grant and Reed Beck and Spencer and Ian Beck.

A remembrance celebration will be held at a later date.

Donations can be made in Lou’s name to the Brenham Fine Arts League.
