Les Meier was born in Houston, Texas on August 27th, 1945
He passed away after a 6.5 year battle with Multiple Myeloma, after his exposure to Agent Orange in Vietnam.
Extremely intelligent and athletic, he excelled academically at Sam Houston High School and enjoyed reminiscing about his many years playing football and basketball. Even being named as “All-American”. He also enjoyed his summers spent on the family homestead near Brenham, Texas playing with his many cousins.
After graduation he entered basic training for the Air Force at Lackland in August of 1964. He was assigned to the 366th Security Police Squadron, Da Nang AB. He served in Vietnam from May 1966 to April 1967 with a short stent at Clark AB in the Philippines.
After his brave service he entered the Houston Police Academy in August 1968. He was assigned to the Central Patrol Division on the midnight shift. He used to make us all laugh at his adventures and called it “some ride”. During the day he took classes, graduating on the Dean’s list with a BS in Psychology and Sociology from Sam Houston University. He was very proud of being a BearKat.
He married Debbie Harding on June 12th, 1970. They had two children when they moved to Plano, Texas in 1978, a second son would follow (1983) and the baby girl, born in New Jersey (1990). They will remember him as being loving, kind, playful. He sacrificed for his family and always put their needs first. He rode motorcycles, dirt bikes, went snow skiing, fished and hunted. He took them on rides at Six Flags, Hershey Park and Dollywood on their many family vacations. He was their hero.
His career path made him an expert in Human Resources, specifically payroll and benefits. Working for Zoecon, Sandoz, Lord and Taylor, KPMG and eventually starting his own consulting company Meier & Associates where he implemented the time and labor modules of large ERP systems for both PeopleSoft and Oracle. A self-coined “Road Warrior” he was able to work on long term projects in Seattle, Boston, Denver, Chicago and Quebec.
Les was a great storyteller, very funny and engaging and was loved by everyone he knew.
Baptized and confirmed Lutheran, he spent his last few years attending Friendship Baptist Church in Fairview where he was involved in the men’s ministry, prayer team, vacation Bible school, local and international missions as well as supporting many other church initiatives.
His favorite mission trip was to Ecuador in 2017 where he helped with Bible clubs, played soccer, did construction projects and even earned the title of “candy man”. Despite his diagnosis and bone marrow transplant, Les return to Ecuador in the summer of 2023.
