Landis Kamas

February 20, 1935 — August 29, 2003

Landis Lanbert Kamas, 68, of Brenham died on Friday afternoon, August 29, 2003 in a Giddings, Texas nursing home. Born in the home of his parents, John Paul & Hermina Jurchak Kamas in the Nelsonville community of Austin County, Texas on February 20, 1935, Landis was baptized in the Nelsonville Brethren Church and attended school in Bellville, graduating from the Bellville High School. On January 4, 1958, Landis and Joan Pieper were married by Rev. Joseph Barton in the Nelsonville Brethren Church. For over forty years Landis ran the accounting department of Palmer Paper Company in Houston, missing only three days of work during the entire time. He was an active member of the Houston Brethren Church and was a member of the United States Naval Reserve. An avid reader, Mr. Kamas enjoyed carpentry, beekeeping, raising fruit trees and attending Bluegrass music festivals. Landis was an expert barbeque artist and his family contends that his secret sauce was the best ever formulated. Mr. Kamas is survived by his wife, Joan; his son, Jonathan Paul Kamas of Houston; his daughters and sons-in-law: Rebecca Gale & Michael Weilmuenster of Midvale, Utah and Pamela Kay & Steven E. Mossbarger of Brenham. He is further survived by his grandchildren: Lucian, Summer and Barak Mossbarger, all of Brenham, and by a sister-in-law, Hattie Kamas of Bellville. Landis is preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Edwin Kamas. The Kamas family will receive callers in Memorial Oaks Chapel; 1306 W. Main St. in Brenham on Sunday afternoon between 4:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. The funeral service for Mr. Kamas will be held on Monday morning, September 1, 2003 at 10 o clock in the Nelsonville Brethren Church with Pastor Michael Groseclose officiating. Burial will follow in the National Cemetery in Nelsonville. Serving as pallbearers will be Billie Pieper, Roy Pieper, Kenneth Pieper, Lynn Pieper, Sydney Jurchak, Tommy Kamas and Wilroy Peschel. The family suggests that memorials be given to either Hospice-Brenham or to the Nelsonville Brethren Church. Funeral arrangements are entrusted to the care of Memorial Oaks Chapel; Brenham, Texas.
