John "Wes" Davenport

April 26, 1941 — December 28, 2023

John Wesley Davenport, 82, died peacefully in his home in Carmine, TX, surrounded by his wife, Madeline Johnson, his daughters and several close family members.

Wes was born in Dallas County, TX and adopted by Nancy and Claude Davenport, who preceded him in death. He graduated Texas Tech University, where he was commissioned into the U.S. Army as a Military Intelligence Officer. He was stationed in Germany for several years during the Vietnam War. Wes had a passion for music, the outdoors, and lively conversation. He was an avid reader who could talk intelligently to anyone on a variety of subjects. His favorite activities included hiking, camping, fishing, canoeing, watching live performances at music venues and local theaters. Wes volunteered on community projects, including the Carmine Park Project and the Lone Star Water Forum. Wes was an active member of St. John's UCC in Burton where he served on church council and participated in the Men's Group and Adult Sunday School. He was a Master Naturalist, a long-time member of the Washington County Wildlife Society, and Mensa. Wes loved animals, particularly his dogs. He was truly a man for all seasons.

Wes is survived by his wife, Madeline Johnson, of 26 years. His daughters and sons-in law, Lea and Chris Dibrell and Heather and Tony Cammiso, grandchildren, Sydney and Jake Bruns, and Kellis Dibrell, nieces and nephews-in-law, Kayla and Jonathan Rouse, and Megan and Eugene Olea. Wes loved learning, laughing, and being with friends and family. We will miss his intellect, humor, and passion for living.
