Jean Frances Miller
Following a recent stroke, Jean Frances Miller died peacefully surrounded by those she loved on September 29, 2026.
Jean was born on June 20, 1940, to Ruth Thompson in Litchfield, Illinois. She developed her gift for what would become a lifelong ministry of hospitality by watching her mother as a child. After her mother's death, she was raised by her older cousin Joyce, whom she loved deeply.
Jean attended Zion-Benton High School in Zion, Illinois. After graduating, she lived in Tupelo, Mississippi, for several years and held several executive administrative positions. But her greatest joy was being a mother to her two children, John David and Debbie Jean.
After relocating to Texas, it was through one of her administrative roles at General Computer Systems that Jean met the love of her life, Richard G. Miller. Richard recalls first seeing Jean in a yellow dress with her blonde hair catching his eye. They were married less than a year later on December 30, 1977.
With their marriage, Jean's family grew to include Richard's children, Kim and Roy, whom she embraced as her own. Together, Jean and Richard blended their homes-a feat Jean managed with the wit, grace, and humor required to do it happily. She also possessed keen hearing and an uncanny ability to sniff out a teenage scheme.
Jean found joy in the simple things that made a home and a life beautiful. She loved tending her flowers and caring for her home. Later in life, she developed a love for reading. She attended pool aerobics with friends she called the Mermaids. They also exchanged books, eventually sending Jean to bed with a book nearly every night. She lobbied intensely for a dog and for the past couple of years loved having Chloe as a constant companion.
Jean was deeply interested in the lives of her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She wanted to know what they were doing and what was happening in their lives. She was known to gather prayer warriors when they were going through a challenge. They loved that Grandma was good for just the right amount of mischief-breaking the rules just enough to make life more fun.
Jean's faith in the Lord was woven through the way she lived, especially in how she cared for people. If you were celebrating a life event or coming to stay in her home, Jean would call ahead to ask about your favorite foods. She noticed what people needed and took joy in making them feel cared for and welcome. She and Richard were faithfully involved in their church for many years and served as Sunday School leaders. Jean also served at Vacation Bible School, on the hospitality and benevolence committees, as Sunday School social chairwoman and at funeral luncheons.
That same faith brought Jean and her family peace in her final days. Her family grieves her absence while finding comfort in knowing that Jean is home with Jesus.
Jean was preceded in death by her mother, Ruth; her siblings, Dick and Mary; her beloved cousin, Joyce Servais; and her son-in-law, Scott Ellard.
She is survived by her husband of 49 years, Richard, and her children: John (Nita) West, Debbie Ellard, Kim (Aubrey) Henley and Roy (Danita) Miller. Her adoring grandchildren include Wendy West, Afton (Aaron) DeVos, Jodi Henley, Hayley (Eric) Butler, Rick (Megan) Henley, Chase (Brandy) Ellard, Keith (Kelli) West, Matt (Jenna) Henley, Alexandra Ellard, Joel (Hailey) Miller, Hannah Miller and Andrew (Kat) Miller, along with thirteen great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her brother, Jerry Cruthis; several beloved nieces; and her beloved little Chloe.
In honor of Jean's love of flowers, we invite those attending her service to wear a bright color like the wildflowers of Texas. In lieu of sending flowers, donations are welcome to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital or Brenham First Baptist Church.
A memorial celebration of Jean's life will be held at Brenham First Baptist Church at 11 a.m. on Saturday, October 17, 2026. A light luncheon and visitation will follow the service. A private graveside memorial service for family will be held at 2 p.m.
Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Memorial Oaks Chapel located at 1306 West Main Street, Brenham, Texas. To post a tribute to the family, please visit www.memorialoakschapel.com
