Janet Gayle Carroll

July 5, 1943 — August 11, 2023

Cedar Park, Texas

Our beloved Janet, affectionately called “Grammy,” left us on August 11 and leaves a space that cannot be filled. Janet was the very definition of a devoted wife, loving and caring mother, sister, friend and confidant, and, of course, she was an adored “Grammy”.  She exemplified the very best in each of those roles and loved her kids, grandkids, family, many friends, and her adoring husband, Rick.  They will remember her for how she loved each of them with dignity and grace, her playful nature, her life lesson “walks,” and her wonderful cooking, especially her cinnamon bread, whoopie pies, and casseroles.

Janet was a teacher and she lived the life lessons she taught. Each day she would live out those life lessons, including treating everyone with respect, to be a trusted confidant and help to others, and to always love.  Whenever one would talk to Janet, one would feel like he or she would be the only one in the room. She loved the country, including living on the farm, antiquing, shopping, outings with her sisters and girlfriends, family gatherings, and holiday trips to Santa Fe, New Mexico.

Janet loved to teach.  She started in the Clear Creak ISD in Galveston County and retired from Brenham ISD after 28 years of teaching. She mostly taught third grade and loved to teach reading.  She was Teacher of the Year at Alton Elementary in Brenham and was nominated for Teacher of the Year for the entire district.

She loved and walked with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.  She was a member of the Brenham Presbyterian Church where she was an Elder on the Church Session.

Janet taught Jesus’ message of non-judgement and love by living a life of acceptance of all people, goodness, and patience with fierce love for those whom God put in her life.

She is survived by her husband, Richard O. “Rick” Carroll of Cedar Park;  her sons and daughters-in-law:  Chuck and Kerrie Hall of Comfort, TX and Kevin and Heather Carroll of Rosenberg, TX; her daughter and son-in-law, Ashley and Micah Royer of Austin, TX; her brothers and sisters-in-law:  Mark and Yvonne Riley of Lake Jackson, TX and Guy Riley and Sonia Tesseur of Brussels, Belgium; her sisters and brothers-in-law:  Sue Ellen and Elfred Pfeffer of Brenham and Cynthia and Michael Wilson of Bethany, OK; her grandchildren:  Erik Hall, Wyatt Hall, Kylar Madison Royer, Grant Royer, Riley Carroll, Maegan Carroll, and Ashlyn Carroll.  Janet is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews, cousins, and other relatives.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Howard Milton Riley and Lettie M. (Warren) Riley.

A graveside service for our “Grammy”, Janet Gayle Carroll, will be held at 10:00 am Wednesday, August 16, 2023 at Oak Rest Cemetery near the Gay Hill community of Washington County, Texas.  Rev. Fred Seay will officiate.  A visitation with her family will be Tuesday from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM at Memorial Oaks Chapel.
