Glenwood Hertel

Glenwood Charles Hertel, 77, of Brenham, Texas passed from this earthly life on Friday, May 24th, 2019 after a very brief illness. Visitation will be 5:00 pm – 7:00 pm, Monday, May 27th, at Memorial Oaks Chapel in Brenham. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 am, Tuesday, May 28th, at Christ Lutheran Church in Brenham with Pastor Walt Schindehette officiating.

Glenwood was born July 4, 1941 in Brenham, Texas to Willie Charles and Lilia Lena (Mackenroth) Hertel. He was baptized September 28, 1941 at Martin Luther Lutheran Church in Carmine and confirmed April 3, 1955 at Emanuel Lutheran Church in Greenvine. He graduated from Brenham High School in 1959. On July 30, 1961, he was united in marriage to Willie Mae Brinkmeyer. This union was blessed with one son, Todd Hertel.

Beginning at the age of 16, Glenwood was employed by Brenham Wholesale Grocery Company. He was faithfully devoted to his job and the company for 62 years. He was the longest tenured employee at the wholesale, continuing to work on the morning he was hospitalized.

Glenwood was a member of Christ Lutheran Church, Hermann Sons Life Lodge, and the Wonder Hill shooting club – making sure he instilled safe handling of firearms into his son and grandsons.

Surviving Glenwood is his wife of 57 years, Willie Mae;

Son and daughter in law, Todd and Darlene Hertel;

Grandsons, Tyler and wife Laura Biggers Hertel and their children Rhody Tyler and Reid Harper; Trevor Hertel and special friend Elizabeth Jakubik; Tucker Hertel and special friend, Eilish Barker. He is also survived by his sister and brother in law, Gayle and Daniel Engeling; brother, Charles Hertel; brothers in law and sister in law, Raymond Brinkmeyer and Bill and Leslie Brinkmeyer along with numerous nieces and nephews.

Preceding Glenwood in death is his parents; mother in law, Martha Brinkmeyer; father in law, Willie Brinkmeyer;

Sisters in law and brother in law, Joyce McAnally, Barbara and Bobby Dewees, and Vickie Hertel.

Serving as pallbearers are Tyler Hertel, Trevor Hertel, Tucker Hertel, Craig Engeling, Lance Engeling, Ronald Bentke, and Michael Williams. Honorary pallbearers will be all former and current employees of Brenham Wholesale Grocery Company, along with his circle of friends from Hermann Sons Life Lodge in Brenham.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to Christ Lutheran Church or Christ Lutheran Day School.
