Gettis Annette Hendrix Steele was carried away by the angels to her Heavenly home on Saturday, June 15, 2024 in Brenham, Texas.
Visitation will be 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Thursday, June 20, 2024 at Memorial Oaks Chapel. The funeral service will be 10:00 a.m. Friday, June 21, 2024 at Memorial Oaks Chapel with burial following at Latium Cemetery.
Gettis was born on December 27, 1939 to Rutherford Hayes and Vera Cornelia (Tupie) Baugh Hendrix in West Monroe, LA. She accepted Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior at a young age where her dad pastored a church in rural West Monroe Louisiana where she played the piano for the congregation.
She was united in marriage to Archie Bernard Steele on August 8, 1957, to this union 5 children were born.
Gettis is survived by her children: Terry (Donna) Steele, Mickey Steele and fiancé Peggy Reimer, Troy (Lila) Steele, Kim (Chris) Duckworth, and John (Mollye) Steele, all of Brenham, Texas
They were blessed with and she is survived by her 12 grandchildren: Wendi Steele Jaurez, Todd (Casey) Steele, Mick (Chelsea) Steele, Tera Steele (Brandon) Miller, Kera Steele, Nikki Steele (Mickey) Smith, Joshua (Elle) Steele, Brooke Steele (Heath) Durham, Collin (Hannah) Duckworth, Joby Hall, Kaylor (Dashanae Dabera) Steele and Zachary Duckworth.
They were further blessed with 23 great-grandchildren, as well as 2 great-great-grandchildren.
Gettis is also survived by siblings: Margaret (Philip) Montgomery, Jerry (Karen) Hendrix, Gaynell Helms, Roland (Laurie) Hendrix, Dale (Wanda) Hendrix; and sisters-in-law: Madie Hendrix and Shelia Hendrix. She is survived by numerous nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews, and great great nieces and nephews, as well as many other relatives and friends.
Gettis was preceded in death by her parents Hayes & Tupie Hendrix, by her husband of 62 years Archie Steele, by brothers Curtis and Timmy Hendrix, sister-in-law Sandy Hendrix, brother-in-law Bobby Helms, and great grandchild Caleb Flores.
In life, Gettis worked numerous jobs, some to note was a Levi Jean Company in California in the early years. After having children she became a housewife, she spent time at home raising her children, as well as babysitting her grandchildren along the way as needed. After that time, she moved back to West Monroe to help take care of her mother, there she went to work for Walmart until her retirement.
In her spare time, Gettis loved to play B-I-N-G-O and could be found at the local bingo hall with her running buddy Madie, if there were nowhere else to find her, that's where she would be.
She liked to go out to eat, she liked the Dallas Cowboys, she was an Elvis Presley fan, her favorite color was blue, and she liked yellow roses. She enjoyed watching game shows and old westerns on TV.
She would answer to Gettis, Gat, Gertrude, Momma, Nanny and Nan. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her.
Gettis spent the last few years of her life at the Brenham Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. Thanks to all of those who cared for her there.
Pallbearers will be her grandsons: Todd Steele, Mick Steele, Joshua Steele, Collin Duckworth, Zachary Duckworth, Kaylor Steele, Marcus Flores and Brody Flores.
Honorary pallbearers will be Mickey Smith, Heath Durham and Brandon Miller who is out of the country serving in the United States Air Force.
