Fred Blum

Fred Blum, 89, of Brenham, died Sunday, April 28, 2019, at Scott and White Hospital in Brenham, after a brief battle with multiple myeloma.

Visitation with the family will be from 5-7 p.m. Tuesday, April 30 at Memorial Oaks Chapel. The funeral service for Fred Blum will be held at 10:00 a.m., Wednesday, May 1 at Zion Lutheran Church of Zionsville, with Pastor Katrina Walther officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Fred was born July 21, 1929, in the Long Point community of Washington County, TX, to Fritz and Emma (Reddehase) Blum. He was baptized and confirmed at Zion Lutheran Church and attended Hoddeville School. After his father passed away when he was 2 years old, Fred and his brother and sister helped their mother operate the family farm, where he continued to live his entire life.

On January 23, 1955, he was married to Bernadine Knuppel at Zion Lutheran Church. Along with farming, he had been employed by the U.S. Department of Agriculture's ASCS unit for 12 years. He then worked as a carpenter for his brother Raymond Blum's construction business for 10 years. He later worked for the City of Brenham Parks Department for about 15 years until his retirement.

For more than 60 years Fred was a dedicated election clerk and election judge in Washington County. He was a faithful lifelong member of Zion Lutheran Church, where he mowed the church and cemetery grounds, helped load donations on the Lutheran World Relief trucks and served on church council, funeral ushering team and as delegate to numerous synod conventions.

Fred enjoyed traveling, including two memorable trips to Germany to visit the homeland of his and Bernadine's ancestors.

Survivors include his wife, Bernadine Blum of Brenham; daughter and son-in-law, Beverly and Dennis Roehling of Brenham, son and daughter-in-law, Craig and Kathy Blum of Brenham; grandchildren, Donald Roehling of Industry, Audrey Blum and fiance Cole Masters of Houston, Beth Eckelhoff and husband Brad of Cypress, and special family member Zach Rupe; great-grandchildren, Cole Roehling of Brenham and Isabel and Ethan Eckelhoff of Cypress; brothers-in-law and sister-in-law, Fred Pelkemeyer and Arnold and Magdalene Knuppel, all of Brenham; one niece, four nephews and numerous cousins.

He was preceded in death by his granddaughter, Lauren Blum Rupe; sister, Mildred Pelkemeyer; brother and sister-in-law, Raymond and Annadell Blum; one niece; one nephew; and his parents.

Pallbearers will be Donald Roehling, Cole Roehling, Brad Eckelhoff, Cole Masters, Wayne Blum, Darrell Blum, Ron Knuppel and Steve Capan.

Memorials may be directed to Zion Lutheran Church Cemetery Fund.
