Floya Ann Merten, 88, of Brenham, died November 8, 2025, at St. Joseph's Hospital in Bryan. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 pm Tuesday, November 11, at St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church in Brenham with Pastor Michael Coffey and Pastor Donna Krueger officiating. Burial will follow at Prairie Lea Cemetery in Brenham. Visitation will be from 5:00pm - 7:00 pm Monday, November 10, at Memorial Oaks Chapel.
Mrs. Merten was born October 25, 1937, in Burton, Texas, to Eddie and Jessie Hickmann Schulz. She was baptized December 5, 1937 and was confirmed March 18, 1951. On October 7, 1956, she married Harvey Henry Merten.
Mrs. Merten was a member of St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church of Brenham. She was a communion minister to members in nursing homes, served on the altar guild, and provided food for special events at the church. She retired from the Snack Plant at Blue Bell Creameries.
Mrs. Merten always looked forward to hosting weekly Sunday dinners with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. There was always homemade dewberry jelly in her cabinet for the family to take home. Her meal specialties included homemade chicken noodle soup and hot meat sandwiches. She knew the favorite meals of everyone in the family and took joy in preparing those dishes.
She enjoyed spending time visiting with her lifelong friends and playing dominos at the Margaret Blizzard Senior Living Center. She also valued her friendship with her special neighbors.
She was beloved as "Grandma" to her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Survivors include daughter and son-in-law, Becky and Darrell "PeeWee" Plagens; son and daughter-in-law, Jerry and Connie Merten; grandchildren, Eric Plagens and wife Pam, Sarah Doelitsch and husband David, Kyle Merten and wife Mindy, and Kory Merten; great-grandchildren, Cooper and Tucker Plagens, Jake and Luke Doelitsch, and Barrett and Gretchen Merten; special niece, Susie and husband John Bilski; and other dear nieces and nephews Linda Thomas, P.L. and Betty Thomas, Evelyn Shead, Mary Beth Jewell, Bill and Carole Merten, and Sandy and Petra Merten.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Charles and Erna Merten; sister and brother-in-law, LaVern and Clarence Reuter; and brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Chester and Lorna Merten.
Pallbearers will be Eric Plagens, Kyle Merten, Kory Merten, David Doelitsch, Nick Bilski, and John Bilski. Honorary pallbearers will be her great-grandchildren.
