Evelyn Maass, 81, passed away at her home in Giddings on August 11, 2026. Funeral services are planned for Saturday, August 15th at 10:00 a.m. at St. John’s United Church of Christ in Burton, with Pastors Darrin Holub and Glen Schoeneberg officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Visitation will be from 5-7:00 p.m. on Friday, August 14th at Memorial Oaks Chapel in Brenham.

Evelyn was born May 29, 1945 to A.E. “Pop” and Lesta Sommerfeld Matthies. She was baptized on August 12, 1945 at St. John’s Evangelical and Reformed Church in Burton. She was confirmed on April 10, 1960. She attended Brenham and Burton schools, graduating from Burton High School. On August 29, 1964, she was married to Dennis Maass at St. John’s United Church of Christ in Burton by Rev. Jewel Johnson. Her career included time at the Banner Press in Brenham which fostered her love of sports followed by Montgomery Wards and Citizens National Bank in Giddings.

Evelyn served her community and church in numerous capacities. Her greatest joy was selling booster club memberships for the Giddings Buffalo Booster club. She and Dennis worked countless concession stands stirring up chopped BBQ or flipping burgers. You could find her at every home football game with numerous cow bells on Row 13. Last year was the first time since the stadium was built that Row 13 was not reserved by her. Sports was her life and our lives revolved around when she needed to watch or listen to the Burton Panthers, Aggies, Astros or Cowboys. Her passion for fundraising extended into organizations that were personal such as the American Diabetes Association and Relay for Life.

She and Dennis were lifelong members of St. John’s where for the longest time they were the only couple to be baptized, confirmed and married in the church. She served the church by selling tickets for the annual St. John’s Turkey dinner and delivering them. She was on the Building Advisory and memorial committees. She was a member of Circle I. Her life revolved around her family, serving others, sports and she will be missed by many.

Survivors included her daughters: Michelle Denise Maass and honorary son-in-law, Russell Friedrich of Giddings; Melissa Dawn Maass of Temple and her beloved cat, Minnie; along with numerous nieces and nephews. Other survivors include two special “littles” that called her “Texas Granny” - Max and Amelia Morehead of Temple.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Dennis Maass; her parents, A.E. “Pop” and Lesta Matthies; mother-in-law and father-in-law, Charlie and Meta Maass; sister and brother-in-law, Marjorie Ann and Eugene Thaler, Carrie May and Mervin Maass; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Verdell and Dennis Mahlmann, Mae Dell and Lawrence Eben; Peggy and Jim Edwards; nephew Kevin Eben and niece Pamela Maass Oldham.

Serving as pallbearers: Laton Giese, Robert Hinze, Darrell Kieke, Wyatt Matthies, Lance Matthies, Chris Kovar and Rusty Mertink.

Honorary pallbearers are: Jane Anne Giese, Maxwell “Max” and Amelia Morehead, Mike Thaler, Rickie Thaler and Leah McCabe.

The family is forever grateful for the “Golden Girls”, “Wednesday Supper Club”, Giddings Police Department and the friends that showed up in a great time of need.
