Evelyn Hill

July 15, 1926 — March 19, 2020

Evelyn Look Hill, 93, of Brenham, Texas, passed away peacefully in her home on Thursday, March 19, 2020.

One of four incredible children, Evelyn was born in Brenham, Texas, to Martha Kramer Look and Ben H. Look. She was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith, and for many years was a member of the Saint Paul’s Evangelist Lutheran Church in her hometown.

Evelyn was the epitome of a strong, independent woman during a time when that was not as widely accepted or celebrated as it is today. In many ways, she was a pioneer. After graduating from high school in Brenham, Evelyn started her first job in the insurance business, one of only a handful of working women in the field at the time.

Not only was she a successful business woman, but also was a single mother when such a thing was even rarer than her budding career. She, along with much love and help from her mother and other close family, raised her only daughter, Cheryl, all while continuing to build her career. After 30-plus years, she “retired” from the insurance world and set out to become a full-time grandmother, or “Mimi,” to her three grandchildren.

But not one to settle for long, she found a new calling in life and discovered a love for plants and flowers. While maintaining her career as full-time Mimi, she worked part time at “A Touch of Green” nursery in Houston. With the same work ethic, she used to build her career and family, she worked harder than most and proved to have quite the “green thumb” for the plants and a “soft heart” for all those with whom she worked. She made many friends, and often showed off the sweet cards and gifts she received from her “nursery family.” She worked there until 2013, when she finally retired for real and moved back to her hometown in Brenham.

Evelyn had many hobbies: writing poems, making flower arrangements for friends and family, gardening, babying her kitties, a competitive game of poker or Scrabble, hosting and helping to organize family Christmas parties, a strong bourbon and Coke (or wine, if the bourbon ran out), and, perhaps her favorite hobby, playing the lottery! Yes, in between impersonating Tweety Bird to the delight of her grandchildren and nurturing plants and friendships alike, she could be found at many a local convenience store playing the lottery. Sometimes successfully, usually not, but always with a smile on her face!

Her greatest joy came in sharing her wealth and helping others. Wealth in this case has deeper meaning than dollars and cents. She shared a wealth of advice, knowledge, and, most of all, love with her family and friends. She was the first to offer out her hand in times of hardship. And she was quick to let you know when to step up for yourself, too!

Evelyn was many things: strong; opinionated; a success story; a pioneer; a memory maker; a flower and plant enthusiast; a beloved friend, daughter, sister, aunt, cousin, mother, and Mimi. Her beautiful heart will forever be cherished by all who knew her, and they will miss her dearly.

Evelyn is survived by her grandchildren, Cristal Peddy (Robert), Kim Skinner, Stephen Skinner (Tara), and Kim Kahlstrom; great-grandchildren, Christopher Kaminski (Selena), Becky Berry (Jonathan), and Cherilyn Kubicek; great-great-granddaughter, Emily Kaminski; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends who became family. She was preceded in death by her parents, Ben and Martha “Nana” Look; ex-husband, James J. Hill; siblings, G.D. “Sonny” Look, Ben Look, and Helen Schulte; brother-in-law, Otto Schulte; daughter and son-in-law, Cheryl and Steve Skinner; and nephew, Gary Look.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to Laroche Manor Assisted Living and Hospice Brazos Valley for their kind and loving care of Evelyn. Additionally, the family extends their warm thank you to Evelyn’s friend, Rob Snow, for his wisdom and, most importantly, friendship to Evelyn and her family for many years.

She will be cremated and laid to rest at Prairie Lea Cemetery in Brenham, Texas. In lieu of flowers, those who wish may give to a charity of choice in her memory.

A memorial service will be announced at a later date.

Funeral arrangements for Evelyn Hill are entrusted to Memorial Oaks Chapel, 1306 W. Main, Brenham, TX.
