Douglas Stout was born in Fort Worth, Texas, on August 23, 1959 with a neurological disability against which he struggled heroically. He died in his sleep on July 12, 2025.
Having lost his vision at the age of three, Doug was educated mainly at the Texas School for the Blind in Austin. He worked for many years as a proud employee of the Light House for the Blind in Fort Worth. He was a devoted sports fan and enjoyed music, and his memory for trivia of both was often astonishing.
Doug was preceded in death by his father, Bob Joe Stout, and grandparents Kenneth and Helean Pitts, Hershel Stout, and Jewell Brown, all of Fort Worth. He is survived by his mother and stepfather, Janis Pitts Stout and Loren D. Lutes, of Brenham; brothers Alan Stout (Shanna) of Houston, Richard Stout (Christina) of Cleveland, Ohio, and Steven Stout (Irina) of Bismarck, North Dakota; step-siblings Daniel Lutes (Molly) of Austin, David Lutes (Angela) of Manchester, Michigan, Laura Lutes Gomez (Angel) of Houston, and Rebekah Lutes of Columbus, Texas. Also an uncle, Kenneth Pitts, Jr., (Shahla) and numerous nieces and nephews, whom he treasured.
Doug remained devoted to his mother and stepfather and especially his brothers throughout his life. All three brothers, as well as stepbrother Dan and nephew Elias Gomez, were with him during his last hospitalization. He had great fondness for his caregivers at Kruse Village Nursing Care in Brenham. We thank them all, especially Robin Cooper, Anna Karrick, Donnell Burns, and Eshanna Hemphill. He taught all of us profound lessons in compassion.
A memorial service will be held at Brenham Presbyterian Church on Saturday, July 26, 2025, at 11:00 a.m., with private interment of ashes at Oak Rest Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Light House for the Blind, Fort Worth, or to Brenham Presbyterian Church.
