Douglas Allen Harmel

November 14, 1951 — April 29, 2024

Douglas Allen Harmel, 72, of Burton, TX, passed away peacefully at his home in Burton, TX.

A visitation will be held from 5:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m., Thursday, May 2, 2024 at Memorial Oaks Chapel.

A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Friday, May 3, 2024 at St. Paul Lutheran Church of Rehburg with Pastor Alvin Luedke officiating.

Douglas was born on November 14, 1951 in Brenham, TX to Harding Albert and Pearlie Ponfick Harmel. He was baptized on December 3, 1951 by Pastor A.R. Wolber and was confirmed on May 14, 1967 by Pastor John Kueker, both at St. Paul Lutheran Church of Rehburg. He married his wife, Debra Maass, on January 22, 1977. He graduated from Burton High School in 1970.

Doug was a lifelong member of St. Paul Lutheran Church of Rehburg. He was a rancher and custom haymaker his entire adult life. He especially loved driving his Gator to check his cattle. Doug loved spending time with his friends, and especially the hunting trips to their Hill Country deer lease-although more cold beverages were killed than deer. More often than not, Doug could be found hanging out with his crew at “The Boar’s Nest”. He enjoyed being around his family and spending time with his daughters; however, one of his greatest loves in life were his three grandchildren. As long as he was physically able, he attended all of their numerous activities. He was their biggest fan. His kind heart, contagious smile, and his sense of humor will be forever missed.

Douglas is survived by his wife, Debra Harmel of Burton, TX; daughters and sons-in-law, Jennifer and husband Brad Glaesmann of Burton, TX and Kayla and husband Doug Stanley of Burton, TX; brother and sister-in-law, Michael Harmel and Molly Russ of Burton, TX; sister and brother-in-law, Janis and husband Alan Krieger of Spring, TX; grandchildren, Bailey Glaesmann, Logan Stanley, and Brenna Glaesmann; and numerous nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents, Harding and Pearlie Harmel; and numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, and other relatives.

Serving as pallbearers will be Brad Glaesmann, Doug Stanley, Terry Korthauer, Joe Neinast, Kenneth Ripple, Bobby Kloecker, Kurt Roemer, and Micah Harmel. Serving as honorary pallbearers will be Ernest Nickerson, Alan Krieger, Heath and Mandy Kalkhake, Keith and Griselda Krieger, Julie Krieger, Chad and Aimee Lewis, Jackson Kalkhake, Kaiden Kalkhake; and dear friends who have gone on before: Larry Ondras, Lemroy Goldberg, Gerald Weigelt, and Kenneth Nienstedt.

Memorials may be directed to St. Paul Lutheran Church of Rehburg.

The family sends special thanks to Pastor Luedke for his numerous visits, and to the Accent Care Hospice team during these last few months.

Funeral arrangements are entrusted to Memorial Oaks Chapel, 1306 West Main Street, Brenham, TX 77833.
