Doris Schomburg

April 11, 1926 — July 31, 2019

Doris Louise “Sweet” Stern Schomburg, 93, died July 31, 2019 in Brenham.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Monday, August 5, 2019 at St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, with Pastor Phil Fenton officiating. Burial will be in Prairie Lea Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 5 until 7 p.m. Sunday at Memorial Oaks Chapel.

Doris was born on April 11, 1926 to Ernest R Stern and Ella Nordt Stern. Early in her life she was, very appropriately, given the nickname Sweet by her father. She went to grade school in Kenney, TX, high school in Bellville and received her associate degree from Blinn Jr. College.

She was married to Dennis Schomburg in 1946. They had two sons – Michael and David. She was a Cub Scout den mother and attended all baseball, basketball, football games and track meets. In addition to caring for her family she was employed as secretary bookkeeper. For many years she was a caseworker for CPS. In 1979 she returned to college at Sam Houston State University and very proudly received her B.S. degree in Social Rehabilitation and Social Services. She was also very active in her church, St Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church.

Doris found great pleasure in gardening, both vegetable and flower. She and her mother canned beans and corn and made dewberry, peach and fig jam – enough to feed both families for the winter. She was quite proud of her roses and got many compliments on her trips to the post office and at church. She was always ordering seeds to start and then grow in her beds. One in particular was a bird of paradise that now has multiple flower stems

After retiring she resumed her golfing and loved playing in tournaments and hated playing with Dennis because of his critiques of her swing or grip or line up. She most enjoyed her time playing bridge and duplicate bridge. She belonged to multiple groups and continued playing with her special Monday group up until a couple months ago. She was quite competitive and did not like to lose!

Doris was preceded in death by her parents; brother Lonnie H. Stern and husband Dennis. She is survived by her sons Michael and David; brother-in-law Carl Schomburg and his wife Anne; sister-in-law Florine Stern and nephews Lon Stern and wife Kay, Ernie Stern and wife Natasha, as well as her “3rd” son, James “Fella” Gillespie.

The family would like to thank Barbara Watts, Cheryl Lightfoot, Right-At-Home Caregivers, and Texas Home Health Hospice.

Memorials may be directed to St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church.
