Connie Diane Averitt, 72, passed away peacefully on September 27, 2026, surrounded by the love of her family.

Connie was born on September 4, 1954, to George Tommy Newman and Mattie Louise Newman. She was raised on her family’s land, a place deeply rooted in her family’s history, dating back to a Spanish land grant. That land would remain a very special part of Connie’s life and would eventually become the place where she built her own forever home.

At the age of 10, Connie was baptized at First Baptist Church, beginning a lifelong relationship with her faith that remained an important part of who she was.

As a young woman, Connie was active in 4-H and Girls Auxiliary at First Baptist Church, developing friendships and experiences that stayed with her throughout her life. She also carried a deep appreciation for her family’s history and heritage, including the military service of her father. She was a member of the Daughters of the Republic.

On August 24, 1974, Connie married the love of her life, Edward "Ray" Averitt at Independence Baptist Church. Together, they built their home on the family land and created a life filled with family, animals, hard work, laughter, and countless memories. Their marriage was a lasting love that became the foundation of their family. Ray was the love of her life and held the most special place in her heart!

Connie was a devoted mother to her two children, Misti and Matthew, and a proud grandmother to her two grandchildren, Lane and Talyn. Family was at the heart of who Connie was. She treasured her aunts, uncles, cousins, friends, and the many people who became part of her extended family throughout her life.

Connie loved the simple things that made life special. She loved riding her horses, spending time with her dogs, and working in her garden. She had a lifelong love for the land and the animals that surrounded her, and she found joy in caring for both.

She was blessed with many special friendships throughout her life, and she loved each of her dear friends as family. In her later years, one of Connie’s greatest joys was gathering around a table to play cards with her friends. Those friends became much more than friends, they became family. The laughter, stories, teasing, and time spent together created some of the memories she cherished most.

She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Edward Ray Averitt; her parents, George Tommy Newman and Mattie Louise Newman; her brother, Tommy Gene Newman and sister-in-law Gayle Denise Newman; and her parents-in-law, Edward Arthur Averitt and Betty Dawn Averitt.

Connie leaves behind a legacy of love that extended to daughter Misti Averitt and son Matthew Averitt; her grandson, Lane Perez and granddaughter, Talyn Perez, as well as Hayden Strack who she loved as her own grandson. She is also survived by sister-in-law Wanda Iselt, brothers-in-law David Averitt and Paul Averitt, as well as a large circle of nieces, nephews, cousins, friends, and loved ones who will carry her memory with them.

She will be remembered for her love of family, her connection to the land she called home, her love for animals, her faith, and the friendships she treasured so deeply.

A funeral service will be held at 10:00am, Thursday, October 1st, 2026, at Memorial Oaks Chapel in Brenham, TX with Charlie Matejowsky officiating. Interment to be determined due to weather.

Pallbearers will be Matthew Averitt, Lane Perez, Paul Averitt, David Averitt, Chris Iselt, Kevin Newman, and Hayden Strack.

Honorary Pallbearers are Marshall Fairbanks, Jimmie Fairbanks, and Dale Fairbanks.
