Clarence Witt

June 10, 1930 — October 27, 2021

Clarence Henry Witt passed away in the comfort of his home in Brenham, Texas surrounded by his family on October, 27 2021 at the age of 91. Clarence was born on June 10, 1930 to Erich and Lillie Witt in the Prairie Hill community of Brenham, Texas.

Clarence attended school at Prairie Hill, Brenham High School, and upon graduation he continued on to Blinn College. After Blinn, Clarence graduated with a Master’s Degree from Sam Houston State University. After achieving his Master’s degree, Clarence dedicated his career to the United States Steel Agri-Chemical division where he eventually retired.

In 1948, shortly after completing high school, Clarence enlisted as a member of the United States Army National Guard. He served a few years of Army active duty as a combat engineer and as a paratrooper with the 71st Airborne Brigade. In addition to proudly serving his country, Clarence was an accomplished musician. He taught himself how to play the guitar which was his most favorite instrument to play. He also played the accordion, piano, and fiddle. He played with industry leaders such as Willie Nelson, Bob Wills, Patsy Cline, and Marty Robbins. Not only did Clarence play with many greats, his love of music gave him the opportunity to play with multiple bands in the Washington County area. Later in his music career, he became the lead for the Clarence Witt and the Texas Trail Riders. They could be found playing in many of the dance halls in the Brenham and surrounding area.

Clarence's passion for music was equal to his love for the Washington county community. He felt the most at home on the Witt Ranch managing his cattle and spending time at the Independence Food Store. He was a lifelong member and part of the music ministry at St John's Lutheran Church in Prairie Hill and he was a member of the Prairie Hill Rocky Hill VFD. He also was a proud member of the Buddy Wright American Legion Post 48 where he served as the Post Commander for several terms and held other officer positions throughout the years.

Clarence is preceded in death by his parents Erich and Lillie Witt, along with most of his band mates.  Clarence is survived by his son and daughter in law, Steven and Margie Witt; grandchildren, Brittany Villatoro and spouse Alex Villatoro, Jonathan Drevecky and spouse Mollie Drevecky, Sara Gregory and spouse Blake Gregory, Justin Witt, Michael Drevecky, and great grandchildren; Vivica Villatoro, Oliva Villatoro, and Drayton Drevecky.
