Charles Landua

November 17, 1942 — March 26, 2026

Charles Eugene Landua, 83, passed away early morning on March 26th, 2026 at the Community Care Living Center in Temple, Texas. He was born November 17th, 1942 in Burton, Texas to Charles H Landua and Nathalie (Rothermel) Landua. He was baptized on January 24th 1943 by Rev. Paul Czerkus at St. Paul Lutheran Church and confirmed on April 14th 1957.

Charles attended and graduated from Burton High, Class of ‘61; he was a football player for the school’s team and played trumpet in the band. After a few years working for Max Zuehlke Chevrolet, he was drafted in 1964 for the war in Vietnam. He served as an infantry cook for the U.S. Army and was honorably discharged in June of 1966.

Upon his return from serving his country, he purchased a beloved maroon Pontiac GTO, which spearheaded his love of car racing, NASCAR in particular as he got older. At an early age he experienced the outdoors hunting and fishing with family and friends, a hobby he continued to enjoy throughout his adult life. He enjoyed many hunting trips with friends in Colorado, and would often feed the deer on his land at home.

After working for Brown & Root in Houston for a few years, he returned to the Rehburg community where he was a dozer operator, helping build Lake Somerville. Later, he became the owner of Charlie’s Short Stop at Rocky Creek park at the very same lake for many years. Once he sold his business, he resumed dozer work as a self-employed operator for friends, family and others in the community.

Charles enjoyed vegetable gardening and often shared his harvest with friends and family, including the dill and cucumbers he would pickle and can himself. He also raised cattle on the land, loved to BBQ and fry fish.

Mr. Landua was preceded in death by his parents and niece, Cheryl Smith.

He is survived by his son, Charles J “Chuck” Landua and daughter, Lacey Landua; grandchildren Matthew and Hailey Landua; great-granddaughter Sutton Hernandez; sisters Laurell Smith, Lavonne Spacek and brother-in-law Larry Spacek; aunt Joan Rothermel; niece Lauren Carlson, and nephews, Landon Spacek and Dr Lance Spacek; and many cherished cousins, family and friends he was blessed to have too many to list.

The family would like to give a special thank you to caretakers Bonnie McClain, Tiffany Tuma, and Donald Hancock; cousins Laurie Satterfield and Donnie Rothermel, as well as everyone else in the family and community who helped take care of him.
