Carl Schwartz

Carl James Schwartz, 94, of Pasadena, Texas died Sunday, January 30, 2022. He was born August 29, 1927 in William Penn of Washington County, Texas to Martin C. and Mary Goeke Schwartz.

Carl grew up and attended school in William Penn. At the age of 16, he enrolled at Blinn Junior College in Brenham, Texas and upon graduation moved to Huntsville, Texas to attend Sam Houston State University to complete his Bachelor’s Degree in 1949. Eventually, Carl would complete his Master’s Degree at the University of Houston and his Doctorate of Jurisprudence from South Texas College of Law in 1959.

At one point during his studies, Carl served our country in the Korean War after being drafted by the U.S. Army.  He received an Honorable Discharge at the end of his service.

Carl spent his life serving in Education and was very active in the community. Carl worked as a government and history teacher for Pasadena Independent School District until 1967 when he began his practice in law.  In addition, he was elected to the Pasadena Independent School Board where he served admirably until 1986.  While serving in Pasadena, Carl was instrumental in helping to form the Gulf Coast School Board Association and he served on the Texas State School Board; having held various officer positions during his tenure. In 1987, he was elected to the Board of the Harris County Department of Education until 2010. While serving on the Education Boards, Carl was sincere and made an honorable effort to improve educational programs, working in close collaboration with his fellow board members. It was said, Carl did his homework making sure his fellow members fully understood the educational causes they were voting on for the community.

From October 1976 until his retirement in January of 2011, Carl served as Associate Judge of the Municipal Courts in the City of Pasadena.  Carl was also an active member with the South Pasadena Rotary and was the recipient of two Paul Harris Fellow Awards.

In May of 1962, Carl married his wife, Gloria Henze at Park Place Lutheran Church in Houston, Texas.  They were blessed with a son, Steven Craig Schwartz.  Holidays and summers were spent at their farm in William Penn raising cattle, fishing, hunting and hosting family gatherings.

Carl was preceded in death by his parents Martin C and Mary Goeke Schwartz, his in-laws William Frederick and Lydia Henze, his son Steven Craig and infant babies Susan Gay and David Schwartz, his brother-in-law William (Bill) and wife, Faye Henze. He is survived by his wife Gloria, sister-in-law Gay Nell Atkinson, nephews Neil Henze (Traci), Mike Atkinson (Lisa) and Kurt Atkinson (Lisa), nieces M’Linda Lasswell (Bryan) and Dr. Gwen Webster (Craig) and great nieces and nephews.

Services will be held on Tuesday, February 8 at Pasadena Funeral Home, visitation at 5:30. Memorial Service at 7:00 p.m. Graveside service will be held the following day, Wednesday, February 9 at Prairie Lea Cemetery in Brenham, Texas at 2:00 p.m.
