Billie Holbert, Sr.

May 16, 1934 — July 14, 2019

Billie Charles Holbert, Sr., 85, born May 16, 1934, passed away at his home July 14, 2019 in Brenham Texas, with family at his side.

Billie (Bill) was born in Monroe, Tennessee May 16, 1934 to Cassie Gertrude Holbert and Homer Proctor Holbert. He enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1953 as a Private and through sheer determination and personal effort rose through the ranks to retire as a Chief Warrant Officer 4 in 1979. While in the Army, Bill met the love of his life, Carolyn Bunch and asked for permission to marry her from her father on April 18, 1955. They were married in August 1955. While in the Army Bill and his young growing family were posted in Germany, Virginia, Ohio, Texas, Pennsylvania, Alabama and later Alaska, and later still Alabama. Bill received his Associate of Science in Engineering Technology from New Mexico State University in 1975 and was a Meritorious Graduate.

Bill’s interests were widely diverse and ranged from a George Strait fan, to golfing enthusiast, to HAM radio operator, to square dance caller. He also enjoyed diagnosing and repairing all things technical from cars, washing machines, air compressors, and automated car washes. His alias in the family was ‘Mr. Fixit’.

Bill was a strong patriarch of his family, a good friend to all, a man who would give his shirt for a friend. He would do things for others with humility and without hesitation. If anyone sought to repay his generosity by asking how much something cost – his standard answer was “$1.98”. Trying to pick up the tab for a meal from Bill was to engage in a battle of wills which he frequently won.

A wonderful father who always took care of his children and did the best he could to teach and guide them, a loving grandfather to many and great-grandfather too.

Bill was a strong, proud and good man. He is loved and will be missed by many!

He is preceded in death by his parents (Cassie and Homer), and a son, Gregory Lee Holbert.

Mr. Holbert is survived by his loving wife, Carolyn Holbert; sister Alice Cox, brother Joe Holbert and his wife Penny, children Billie Holbert Jr. and his wife Sherry, and Sherree Buckland and her husband Carl; seven grandchildren;, Macy Pena, Chad Buckland, Faran Buckland, Rachel Hults, Sarah Wilkinson, Alexis Buckland, Billie Holbert III; Aubrey (Grace) Holbert, and Christopher Holbert, five great-grandchildren: sister, Kay Holbert, and a host of nieces, nephews and other beloved friends and relatives.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Jim Holbert and Ray Holbert.

A memorial service will be held at Memorial Oaks Chapel on Thursday, September 5th at 2pm. A private family burial will take place at a later date where he will be layed to rest at Prairie Lea Cemetery in Brenham, Texas.
