Betty Yoakum

Fayetteville, TX

Betty Joy Doss Yoakum of Fayetteville, Texas died at Brenham Nursing and Rehab on October 2, 2022 after a brief battle with cancer.  She was born to Bailey Antonio Doss and Sabina Pelzel on October 21, 1932 in the Bushdale Community in Milam County near Rockdale, TX.  She was a high school cheerleader and graduated in 1949.  On June 10, 1949, she married Vernon Russell Yoakum.  To this union were born Rebecca (Larry) Schroeder, Steven Yoakum, and Christopher (Elizabeth) Yoakum.

She is also survived by grandsons Scott Ashley (Kandace) Schroeder, Brett Russell (Jennifer) Schroeder and great grandson Tanner Cash Schroeder.

She was preceded in death by:  husband -  Vernon R. Yoakum, Parents - Bailey Antonio and Sabina Doss,  in-laws -  George Emmett and Bessie Yoakum and a niece - Patsy Menn Regan.

Her survivors include beloved sister – Adele Lumpkins, niece – Nanette Wells, nephew – Ronny J. Menn, special nephew – George R. (Bobby) Yoakum, special friends – Suzanne Smith, Cindy Larson, Steve Thompson, Alan Hoops.  She is also survived by Special “Grandson” Taylor Larson.

Over the years she was greatly involved in politics and served Washington and Fayette Counties.  She proudly spent 16 years as a 4-H Leader and a number of years as a Casa Volunteer.  She sponsored an Alateen Group for 21 years.  In her younger days she was a floor model for Schepp’s Ready to Wear in Houston.  She was a secretary for the family business, Yoakum Housemoving, inc.

She moved to Fayetteville, TX in 2012 and became an active member of Fayetteville Brethren Church and considered the congregation as her second family.

Visitation with the family will be held on Friday, November 18, 2022 from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm at Memorial Oaks Chapel. A memorial service celebrating Betty's life will be held Saturday, November 19, 2022, at 10:30 am at Memorial Oaks Chapel.
