Benito “Benny” Gonzales passed away on June 10, 2021 at 75 years old. Visitation with the family will be on Tuesday, June 15, from 4:00 to 8:00 pm at Memorial Oaks Chapel. The rosary will be recited at 6pm. The following day, Wednesday June 16, a funeral service will be held at 10 am at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Brenham, Texas. Burial will follow at Oaklawn Cemetery in Somerville, Texas.
Benny was born on March 21, 1946 in Somerville to parents Jose Guadalupe Gonzales and Sotera Oliva Gonzales. He grew up in a large family with four brothers and seven sisters. Benny graduated from Somerville High School. Shortly afterwards, he was drafted to the US Army in 1966. He was deployed to Germany. After he was honorably discharged in 1968, he returned home to Somerville. He was married to Mary Flores, the love of his life, and they started a family together. They were blessed with six daughters, many grandchildren, and two great grandchildren.
Benny was employed for a short time by the Santa Fe Railroad in Somerville, but decided after a few years that the job wasn’t for him. He began to do carpentry work and build homes. He had a reputation for being an excellent carpenter and was very knowledgeable about his trade. He continued to do carpentry work all his life.
Benny loved to be outdoors working with his hands. He loved cutting grass, building projects, working in the shed, and building birdhouses. He was full of character and always had a great sense of humor. He picked on those he loved and showed affection by calling everyone “a big dummy.” He loved driving around in his favorite cars and trucks listening to oldies.
Benny is survived by his wife of over 50 years, Mary; daughters Patricia, Annie, Sonia, Hope, Sissy, and Benita, (including son in laws: Terry, Stephen, Steven, Anthony, and Jacob) grandkids Vanessa, PJ, Terry Jr., Kayla, Joe, Emma, Lia, Stephen, Nari, Benjamin, Nicholas, Daniella and Daniel; and great-grandchildren Maci and Mya and granddog Nemo. He is survived by his siblings Sylveria, Zenaida, Marcie, Helen, Geneva, Frank , Theresa, Linda, and Lazero. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. He is preceded in death by his parents, and brothers Joe and Freddie.
Pallbearers will be his daughters. Honorary pallbearers will be his grandchildren.
