Joyce Grote

February 15, 1926 — January 21, 2019

Joyce Grote, 92, died January 21,2019 in Austin.

Joyce was born Feb. 15, 1926 in Burton to Walter and Milda Wenzel Grote. She was confirmed in March of 1940 in St. John E&R Church in Burton. She began her education in Burton, and continued in Austin after the family moved in 1943.

Joyce was preceded in death by her parents; infant brother, Walter, Jr.; sisters Dolores Grote and Jackie Grote Prigge; niece Anne Marie Prigge Hooks, and sister-in-law, Virginia Grote; brother-in-law Willie Prigge, Jr.

Survivors include her brother, William A. Grote, sr. and wife, Arminda; niece, Sherri Grote Bernstein and husband Ron; nephew, William A. Grote, Jr. and wife, Debbie; nephew Ken Prigge and wife Sharon, as well as numerous great-nieces and great-nephews. Also surviving is her best friend and companion, Jo Wilson.

As a young adult she worked many years as an accountant/office manager for Holland Page, an Austin road contractor. When the company closed, she and Fred Rodriguez became co-owners of an Austin roofing company, where she remained until she retired.

Joyce enjoyed outdoor activities including sports, fishing and camping. She loved hunting and was a lifetime member of the NRA and the TSRA. Along with her sisters, she enjoyed playing softball. Joyce and Dolores were widely know as stellar players in Women’s City League softball in the 40’s and 50’s. She was an avid deer hunter but no “headhunter” and more important than the hunt was the use of the animal, which she knew from A-Z. She knew how to shoot, properly dress, butcher, preserve, and make sausage from cutting the meat to stuffing the links, even smoking it. She created a spiral notebook of the entire procedure, including how to clean the casings, seasonings, smoke time, etc., with notations on do’s and don’t’s each season, as well as how many pounds were processed. Annual good times were enjoyed when Dolores, Joyce, Butch, and other family members were making sausage.

A private family graveside service will be held Thursday. Memorials may be directed to St. John United Church of Christ in Burton.

Funeral arrangements for Joyce Grote are entrusted to Memorial Oaks Chapel, 1306 W. Main, Brenham. To post a tribute to the family, visit www.memorialoakschapel.com.
