Nelda Zuehlke Kankel, 88, of Brenham, passed away peacefully Thursday, March 19, 2009, at Hearthstone Health Care Center in Round Rock. Mrs. Kankel was born September 16, 1920, in Washington, Texas, to Paul Sr. and Olga Albrecht Zuehlke. She was baptized November 4, 1920, at Friedens Church of Washington and was confirmed January 1, 1936, at the same church. On June 20, 1940, she was married to Raymond Kankel at Friedens Church of Washington. They became lifelong residents of Brenham. Three children were born to them: Nancy, Daniel and Billy. Mrs. Kankel was a loving wife and mother who always wanted the best for her children. She cherished her family, friends and being a member of St. Paul''s Evangelical Lutheran Church and the Ladies Aid. Mrs. Kankel also enjoyed the many years working with friends at Brenham Wholesale Grocery. Mrs. Kankel was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Raymond Kankel; sisters, Elsie Zuehlke Sommerfeld and Lillian Zuehlke; and brothers, Herman, Bill and Herbert Zuehlke. Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, Nancy Faye and Howard Campbell of Round Rock; sons and daughters-in-law, Daniel Ray and Bonnie Kankel of Round Rock and Billy Wayne and Candy Kankel of Pflugerville; four grandchildren, Christy E. Campbell, Tiffanie L. Kankel, Kaelie R. Kankel and Daniel Ray Kankel, Jr.; a brother, Paul Zuehlke, Jr. of Bryan; brother-in-law, Almot Sommerfeld; as well as a number of nieces and nephews. Visitation with the family will be from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. Saturday, March 21 at Memorial Oaks Chapel. The funeral service will be at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, March 22 at St. Paul''s Evangelical Lutheran Church of Brenham with Pastors Lawrence Bade and Phillip Fenton officiating. Burial will be in Prairie Lea Cemetery in Brenham. Pallbearers will be her nephews, Arthur Earl Zuehlke, Fritzie Zuehlke and Jimmie Zuehlke; son-in-law, Howard J. Campbell; grandson, Daniel Kankel, Jr.; and her niece''s husband, Milton Bosse. Memorials may be given to St. Paul''s TV Ministry.. Funeral arrangements are entrusted to Memorial Oaks Chapel, 1306 W.
