Melvin Steinkamp

Melvin Steinkamp, 87, was granted eternal peace by his heavenly Father on October 18, 2003. A celebration of his life will be held at St. Paul s Evangelical Lutheran Church in Brenham at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, October 21, 2003, with Pastor Lawrence Bade and Pastor Kim Little-Brooks officiating. He will be laid to rest at Prairie Lea Cemetery. The family will receive relatives and friends from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Monday at Memorial Oaks Chapel. Mr. Steinkamp, the son of Christ H. and Alvina Loesch Steinkamp was born July 3, 1916 in the Gay Hill community. He was baptized into the Christian faith on August 3, 1916 and was confirmed on March 29, 1931 at St. Peter s Lutheran Church of Gay Hill. Melvin married Nelda Greinert in St. Peter s Evangelical Church of Coupland, Texas on October 26, 1941. They had two children, Doris Steinkamp Kohring and Dennis Steinkamp. Mr. Steinkamp was educated in the Gay Hill schools. He farmed with his family for several years before he became involved in insurance sales and later owned and operated the Rockdale Memorial Company of Brenham. He continued to sell insurance for many years after. During his years in business, he became acquainted with many people and always enjoyed visiting with them. After retirement, he especially enjoyed morning coffee with his friends at several local restaurants and playing dominoes with his buddies in Bleiblerville. He was a member of St. Paul s Evangelical Lutheran Church of Brenham where he served as an usher for a number of years. He was also a member of the Sons of Hermann Lodge and the New Wehdem Rifle Club. Survivors include his wife of 61 years, Nelda Steinkamp of Brenham, daughter and son-in-law, Doris and Jerry Kohring of Brenham, and son Dennis Steinkamp of Navasota. He is also survived by his grandchildren and their spouses, Michele and Jimmy Kwiatkowski, Deborah and Robert Hodde, and Michael and Lela Kohring, all of Brenham; granddaughters Melissa Thomas of Baytown and Bobbie Jo Steinkamp of San Antonio; great-grandchildren Mason and Lauren Kwiatkowski, Bailey, Ashley, Colby and Maggie Hodde, Marshall Kohring, and Ryan and Samantha Thomas; sisters-in-law and brother-in-law, Aline Kautz and Calvin and Joyce Greinert, nieces, nephews and cousins. Mr. Steinkamp was preceded in death by his parents, brothers and sister-in-laws Louis and Lorena Steinkamp, Erwin and Edna Steinkamp, Bill Steinkamp, and an infant brother, Arthur Steinkamp, sister and brothers-in-law Erna and Arthur Schroeder and Gilbert Kautz. Pallbearers are Clyde Thomas, Robert Hodde, Michael Kohring, David Kautz, Jimmy Kwiatkowski, James Allen Lehrmann, Rueben Melcher, and Leroy Schroeder. Honorary pallbearers are Wensel Brauner, Elwood Goldberg, Ken Mutscher, Gus Rust, F. C. Schulte, Ernest Witte and Clarence Gerke. Memorials may be given to the Christian Day School or T. V. Ministry of St. Paul s Evangelical Lutheran Church of Brenham or Hospice Brenham, Brazos Valley. Funeral arrangements for Mr. Melvin Steinkamp are entrusted to Memorial Oaks Chapel, 1306 West Main, Brenham.
