Edwin Harmel

Edwin Harmel, 99, of Brenham, died May 20, 2007, at Kruse Memorial Lutheran Village in Brenham. Mr. Harmel was born Feb. 11, 1908, in Burton, Washington County, Texas, to Fritz and Nora Korthauer Harmel. He was baptized March 22, 1908, in St. Paul Lutheran Church of Rehburg by Pastor John Meyer and was confirmed Sept. 24, 1922, in the same church by Pastor H. Weber. Mr. Harmel attended Hohenwalde School. On Nov. 30, 1939, he was married to Florence Korthauer at St. Paul Lutheran Church of Rehburg by Pastor C.A. Lehne. To this union, one son, Donnie Harmel, was born. Mr. Harmel was a life-long member of St. Paul Lutheran Church of Rehburg, where he served on the council a number of times and on the building committee. He was a farmer and carpenter. Survivors include his wife, Florence Harmel of Brenham; daughter-in-law, Sherry Harmel of Kerrville; granddaughters, Shelia and Bret Kapner of Pasadena, Denise and Eddie Garza of College Station and Tonya and Jason Carroll of Mason; great-grandchildren, Heather Nicole Kapner, Chelsea Michelle Kapner, Bailee Elizabeth Carroll, Kayla Marie Carroll and Donnie Edward Garza; sister, Lydia Oevermann of Brenham; and numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. He was preceded in death by his son, Donnie Harmel, on Oct. 19, 1997; parents, Fritz and Nora Harmel; father-in-law and mother-in-law, William and Louise Landua Korthauer; eight brothers-in-law; five sisters-in-law; and two nephews. The family will receive visitors from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Tuesday, May 22 at Memorial Oaks Chapel in Brenham. The funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, May 23 at St. Paul Lutheran Church of Rehburg with Pastor Larry Henrichs officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Pallbearers will be Douglas Kochwelp, Glenwood Prenzler, Woodrow Heine, Caleb Goldberg, Travis Oevermann, Darrel Oevermann and Dale Hinze. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to St. Paul Lutheran Church of Rehburg or the Donnie E. Harmel Scholarship Fund. Funeral arrangements are entrusted to Memorial Oaks Chapel, 1306 W. Main St., in Brenham.
