Clarence Bean

July 23, 1921 — May 14, 2013

Clarence Bean, 91, died May 14, 2013 in Scott and White Hospital in Brenham. Graveside services are scheduled for 10 a.m., Friday, May 17, 2013 in Industry Methodist Church Cemetery, with Rev. Leo Carrasco officiating. Clarence Bean was born July 23, 1921 in Jonesboro, Arkansas to Elmer and Edith Coy Bean. Mr. Bean enlisted in the U.S. Army on May 15, 1942, and served his country during World War II in a brigade then known as the First Special Force, nicknamed the "Black Devil''s Brigade." This name was chosen because the men had to blacken their faces to initiate the assaults in the dead of night. He served in the Asiatic-Pacific Campaign, and was awarded the Bronze Star. Serving in the European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign earned him four Bronze Stars and one Silver Star attachment. He also received a Purple Heart for combat during his service. Other accolades included the WWII Victory Medal, Army Good Conduct Medal, Infantryman Badge, Expert Rifleman Badge, American Campaign Medal, National Defense Medal, and Parachute Wings. After the war ended, he was honorably discharged on October 31, 1945, and returned home. Mr. Bean served his country courageously, a true veteran who loved his country, and during his lifetime, wanted only to pay tribute to those with whom he served, and honor those who did not return home. He thought his service was not unusual, and felt both gratitude and remorse at being blessed with a long life, living in a great country that he fought so valiantly to protect. Mr. Bean was a lifelong member of the American Legion, the VFW, the Masonic Lodge, Houston Scottish Rite, as well as the Arabia Shriner''s Association. Survivors include his wife, Helen Bean of Corpus Christi; son Kenny David Bean and family of Phoenix, Arizona; brothers Harold Bean and family of New Ulm, and Paul Bean and family of Jonesboro, Arkansas, as well as several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, one son, Mike Bean, and two brothers. Memorials may be directed to Hospice Brazos Valley or to any favorite charity. Funeral services for Clarence Bean are entrusted to Memorial Oaks Chapel, 1306 W. Main, Brenham. To post a tribute to the family, visit www.memorialoakschapel.com.
