Alfred "Freddie" Herrmann, 73, of Cypress, TX, passed away Wednesday, October 1, 2014 at St. Joseph''s Medical Center in Houston, TX. Alfred was born July 27, 1941 in Brenham, TX to Henry and Emelia Herrmann. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Paul''s Lutheran Church in Brenham, TX. He attended public schools in Brenham and spent 4 years in the armed forces Army. He then joined the Houston Police Academy November 12, 1962 as a member of the Academy class 29. One of the many highlights of his career was the exemplary score on his sergeants exam. He retired March 4, 2000 as a Sergeant in the Homicide department. His favorite years with the HPD were in the homicide division. He met and married the love of his life, Nina Mertz, August 25, 1963. They were blessed with 51 wonderful years of marriage and were gifted with three sons, Tim, Gary, and Tracy; and three wonderful daughters-in-law, Lisa, Jackie, and Jill. The highlight and loves of his life were his five grandchildren; Ryan, Garrett, Luke, Landon, and his granddaughter Logan. His family always came first and was the pride of his life. He enjoyed hobbies such as fishing and watching the kid''s ballgames. He frequently enjoyed hanging out and visiting with his fishing buddies. Alfred and Nina were longtime members of Messiah Lutheran Church in Cypress, TX. Left to cherish his memory is his wife, his children and grandchildren, his sisters and brothers-in-law: Allyne Weiss, Lillie Watkins, Evelyn Maurer, and Alton Sommerfield, Leroy Weiss and Karl and Sue Hoff; sisters-in-law Kathy Carroll, Margie Mertz, and Virginia Herrmann; and countless nieces and nephews and their families, and many wonderful friends. He is preceded in death by his parents, his in-laws, Albert and Sylvia Mertz; his brothers: Reinhold and Henry Bubba Herrmann; his sisters Emelia Ann Baby Hoff and Bernice Sommerfield; brothers-in-law Robert Watkins, Melvin Maurer, Ross Zwernemann, AV Carroll; and niece Kristen. Pallbearers for Alfred are Greg Woody Williams, Brian Roman, Jeremy Lewis, Bryan Marquart, Gary Smith, and David Smith. Honorary Pallbearers are his grandsons and members of the Retired Police Officer''s Association. A visitation will be held from 5:00-8:00 p.m. Friday, October 3 at Memorial Oaks Chapel in Brenham, TX, and the funeral service will be held at 10 AM, Saturday, October 4, 2014, at Messiah Lutheran Church in Cypress, TX with Rev.
