Alfred Becker

Alfred Becker was born on May 1, 1927 in the Sandy Hill community of Washington County, Texas, the son of Otto & Della Haas Becker. He was baptized in St. Matthew Lutheran Church at Sandy Hill and was later confirmed there. Alfred was a graduate of Brenham High School, Blinn College and a number of police academies. He was a veteran of the Korean War, having served his country between the years of 1950 and 1952. Alfred and Verlene Kirk were united in matrimony by Pastor A.J. Mohr in Bellville, Texas on January 9, 1961. Mr. Becker devoted the majority of his adult life to the law enforcement profession, joining the Brenham Police Department in 1950, when it consisted of just four officers. For many years, he protected and served the people of Brenham, ultimately being promoted to the rank of Chief of Police on April 1, 1977 until 1986. Following his retirement, he continued to serve the community as a security officer at Trinity Medical Center and as a bailiff in the Washington County Court House. A member of St. Paul s Evangelical Lutheran Church of Brenham, Alfred was also a member of Buddy Wright Post #48 of the American Legion and of James F. Dillon Post #7104 of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. An enthusiast of classic modes of transportation, Alfred was a member of the Antique Motorcycle Club of America as well as Special Interest Fords of the 50 s. In the early morning hours of Friday, April 30, 2004 Alfred died quietly in Trinity Medical Center. Surviving him are his wife, Verlene; their daughter and son-in-law, Melanie & Allen Jacobs and grandson, Brad Allen Jacobs, all of whom live in Brenham. The Becker family will receive callers in Memorial Oaks Chapel on Sunday evening, May 2, 2004 between 6 o clock and 8 o clock. The funeral service for Mr. Becker will be held in St. Paul s Evangelical Lutheran Church of Brenham on Monday afternoon, May 3, 2004 at 3 o clock. The service will be officiated by Pastor Lawrence Bade and Pastor Kim Little-Brooks. Burial will follow in Prairie Lea Cemetery. The family suggests that memorials be given to Hospice-Brenham, Trinity Medical Center and St. Paul s Evangelical Lutheran Church.
